It wasn't to be for us. We are out, but we created enough chances to go through.

I had hoped that we could have risked a little bit more in extra time, because at that time, we had an advantage. One goal, and they had needed to score 2 goals.

In the penalty shootout, you could almost read through the lines that we were the weaker side. Gomes is a top class penalty keeper, and Robinson is not. All credit to Robinson for saving one penalty, but to be fair - it was not a good penalty either. All the other penalties were easy for them, as Robinson already laid down before the shot was gone.

We need a new goalkeeper for sure. When we play matches like this, we really discover that we need a top class goalkeeper as out 1st choice. Robinson did some good saves today, but overall, he is not world class.

Neither was Jenas', or Chimbonda's. If Jenas' had gone in, would you be blaming Robinson?

Have you been watching Spurs lately? I take it you haven't, which is unfortunate, because you've missed some top-class saves lately.

And hey, Superscout, how are Toulouse, your team to watch ++, doing? Fantastic performance by the World's Most Gifted Team in the ACN, too. I just loved the way they rolled Egypt over.

Well, we have not even reached the Quarter Finals.....in a poor Eufa Cup. It was 'bound' to be Jenas and Chimbonda that missed. Where I watched the gam NOT one person was confident that either would score....and that was outside of the 'usual' BAD LUCK or common Fox Foot feelings....NO, BOTH of these players are weak when it comes to PRESSURE (but it is easy to say that AFTER the event....however....we are OUT, again).
Our season is as good as OVER.....bar a frantic race to see how far we can manage to climb before we loose interest and loose some of our squad! Has it been a total disaster or will the Carling MUG serve as an incentive for greater things in the months ahead? Right now....NOT a LOT.....COYS!

Thanks for making the season 'up and down' again lol

In response to Christophe, on the evidence of the last two games (haven't seen much Dutch footie lately) I would disagree that he's a great keeper. He's a good keeper but seems to flap a little when coming for crosses. Credit to him for coming for them in the first place but he does seem to over-rely on punches rather than catches. Also, one thing that struck me from tonight's game was that he doesn't seem to communicate well with his CBs. On more than one occasion there were mix-ups with the CB (forgot his name but the one who could have scored an OG in the first half) - the keeper didn't seem to have shouted for it & that kind of communication is central to commanding the box.

Gutted though, I won't blame any of the PK takers as it must take a gargantuan set of knackers to do it in the first place. I think it was a mistake to play so much down the centre as it was often congested & PSV seemed to get far too much space especially down the left wing with Afellay & later Calcido (sp?), odd really because we normally play wider than that. Perhaps not the time to start playing a diamond when its not our natural game.

I just hope we don't start to fizzle out in the league now there's less to play for although I would support a certain amount of experimentation regarding younger players & ones on the fringe, partly to give valuable experience to the youngsters, partly so Ramos can properly assess which areas need strengthening for next season.

Still, a crying shame but no need to get too down, were still on the up.

How on earth can you criticise the tactics! The tactics were spot on, we dominated most of the match, looked in control and created several good oppertunities whilst still looking solid defensively. Tactically we got it spot on, played very very well and deserved the 1-0 win. What we did get wrong was the home performance and result which both could've been better. Peno's can be a coin flip.

Real proud of the lads tonight.

Also, Best of luck to PSV they play some nice football, not dirty cheating players, a nice coach and their goalie kept kicking the ball out to see if our player was ok etc. I hope they go on to win it :)

:)

I understand what you're saying, but I find a keeper willing to risk a mistake in order to command his area quite refreshing.

You might, but it doesn't take a great leap of the imagination to foresee the reaction on SC if those mistakes go wrong.

This is what troubles me in the whole Great Keeper Debate. Everyone is aware of Robbo's abiding weakness, but a James-type keeper like Gomes or Kameni presents other problems. For me the first priority is a solid defence, and here's where so many SC members get things arse-about-face: the keeper's primary job is to protect the goal; the defence's, to protect the keeper. It seems to me that for many on SC the keeper is expected to compensate for the defence's deficiencies, and, as I've posted umpteen times, a keeper can only do so much. Behind our defence as it's been for a season-and-a-half, Cech or Buffon would be having kittens.

For me, picking a keeper is the biggest minefield of all, even more so than signing a striker. On what I've seen, Gomes is the best keeper in the Eredivisie, at least as good a shot-stopper as Robbo, but there is still a question-mark for me. I'll leave it to the experts—and, God knows, they get it wrong from time to time.

i admit my post was made with alot of dissapointment and emotion, a natural initial reaction when u care about something so much. Now ive calmed down and had some reflection, i still have some negative vibes, i.e why didnt attacking players like malbrank or lennon volunteer to take penalties? why was it left to 2 defenders and even zokora who has never scored before?

Lennon hasn't got the greatest shot, Steed is, let's say, erratic. It's a lottery. I kept my eyes open for every one but Zoko's.

The Yak hit the post for Everton tonight. Jagielka, who's a pretty safe bet, had his shot saved. Shit happens, especially in shoot-outs. Let's put it behind us, move on, and fill our boots on Sunday.

Not much of a criticism really & I agree with most of your post but we did seem a tad exposed down the flanks in the first half which might have been lessened by a wider formation & having Lennon's pace down the right with Steed's endeavour on the wide left might have pinned them back further as they seemed to have a lot of space on the counter attack. Still, I suppose you can expect that when we go all out for the win as we rightly did.

Please don't have me down as a negative bastard as I'm really not & I only meant it as a "maybe we might have been even more effective if..." kind of thing. Hey, we might have got done over if Ramos had agreed with me but... just observations.

Can't fault that at all. Well said mate!

With Bayern, Fiorentina, PSV, et al, yeah, sure. Probably the weakest UEFA in years.

If a team wins a game but loses in penalty shoot-out, like us tonight, it still counts as a win, record-wise?

Because the guys updating Tottenham manager's record on Wikipedia put tonight's game as a loss for Juande Ramos.

Just wondering. Not that it matters that much. I just like stats to be correct.

Because they didn't fancy it... I'd much rather a defender who fancied it take one than a midfielder who didn't...

It's not just because you're 104 that you talk sense. I know lots of 30-40+'s who talk complete and utter shite.

But this post is spot on.

So often people look for scape goats. I know for a fact a mate of mine would have had a tiny, tiny bit of him hoping Zokora missed, just so he could slate him. In fact, he text me after Jenas' miss and said "that is why I will NEVER like him".

Shit like that makes my blood boil, much more than Spurs going out. "Fans" reactions is frustrating me more and more.

I think everyone who steps up to take a penalty should be commended. It's those who sit back and opt for 8, 9 and 10 that I question.

I think Bent and Zokora are absolute legends for taking pens. Purely because of the hate campaign around them. I think that's more prevalent with Bent.

I'm rambling now. It's late. Dunno why I even started typing this.

I'm a little drunk, very upset but also pretty proud. Our season ends here in truth. But we still have a good few games to ENJOY.

Players will be quite literally playing for the shirt.

COYS! If you'd have been offered the League Cup in August, would you have taken it?

Course you bloody would!

I think the most surprising thing from last night, was that when the Hudd took his penalty, it wasn't cleared by the first defender.

Absolutely. I'm more miffed at Malbranque than I am either Jenas or Chimbonda. Sometimes they just don't go in, but have the balls when your team needs you

We played well and were the better side last night, very unlucky to go out, but shit happens. Penalties are a lottery and PSV got the jammy winning ticket. I feel over the two legs we didn't really play at our best and if we had we'd have beaten them.

It's still a trophy winning season and we'll come back better and stronger next season, Juande will get the Uefa cup for us next year.
