There's being optimistic and then there's being delusional.

You've been shown by history to be delusional.

Now look Nev, I know Mummy has tried to keep these harsh truths from you, but not everyone who disagrees with you ever on anything is wrong all of the time on everything

1. Leave your Mum out of it.

2. You post this thread every season about how optimistic you are. No one cares.

I'm very optimistic. Loving the way we've been cutting out the deadwood ... sorry ... loyal servants of the club *cough* and that should free up squad places for our youngsters. We obviously need one or two more before the deadline but it looks like we have a plan and I can't remember the last time I thought that about our club.

In between. Pessimistic that we can improve on last season, in terms of league position, cup runs or playing style.

Optimistic two or three of the kids will develop really well this season. And while the windows still ajar there's still hope of a signing or two.
This. We won't improve on last year's league position. In fact I can see us being behind Liverpool in May '16 given their excellent recruitment this transfer window.

Still time to add 2-3 players, but as it stands (and until the stadium is finished) we would've done good if we've maintained some sort of status quo.

I voted "Do not know" as I believe that while Poch has most of the ingredients for the cake, he still does not know what amount of each ingredient to use. For example, I am still wary of him not applying the right personnel and / or formation to the relevant opposition. In this respect I think he is too rigid. I suppose for me the jury is still out on him. Now that he has most of the playing staff what he wants, while getting rid of those he doesn't, lets see him get rid of my doubts.

The way we outplayed United makes me very optimistic. Not top 4 optimistic but I think we will improve much on attacking and we will be a delight to watch again.

Don't really understand how people can say that we "outplayed" or "bossed" ManUtd. It was a clear tie to me, in most aspects of the game, obviously except for the one error in our side. Additionally, despite ManUtd having less possession, they saw far more of the ball on our half than we did on their half. Especially down the left, but also partly down the right, they advanced much further and more often than we did. You don't win matches by having the ball. You win matches by doing the right things when you do have the ball.

Ah man I got it wrong.

I put yes I'm not optimistic, instead of no I am...

;) Pretty sad you have to spell it out like that, surely yes/no would suffice...

Cautiously optimistic, I want to see improvement in creating as a unit, and not just relying on pace/trickery of one or two players to create chances.

Would like to see Carroll involved more to aid in that respect as his passing range is more inventive and a little bit off the cuff whereas the others' passing can be a bit pedestrian and predictable, also his natural game sees him moving around to find pockets of space, which by itself creates space for others by moving around opposition players.

However I don't believe we have the front 5 yet to be able to play a DM that can do little else but mop up and pass simple 10-15 yard balls to players wide open.

Having too many players that can only slow the game down doesn't help, we need more that can change the tempo up, whether that's with a first time pass or an incisive run/dribble.

But we appear to be building a solid base with actual defensive cover, now to work on passing and moving...

We are doing better than Arsenal and 1 point off Chelsea with easier games remaining than both.

Game on.

optimistic. if we add njie and berahino, along with pritchard returning from injury then that's three 22 year olds who can all contribute for a very long time. we're putting ourselves in a position where all we'll need each summer is the odd tweak here and there, just need the fans to stay patient and back what the club are doing.

I'm ever the pessimist as it means I can always be pleasantly surprised, rather than regularly pissed off.
I don't think we have the strength in depth or the quality of player to genuinely challenge the top 4 this season.
I also don't think that will change in the next 3 weeks.
I admire that we are trying to improve through the academy though.

I agree, we certainly didn't boss the game

It was a dull affair where both teams nullified one another and each had very brief periods of controlling the game in between the larger periods of zero action

If anything their having a lead to protect and our having to chase the game may have skewed peoples perception toward the close of the match and give people the impression we were outplaying them when really we were just trying to go all out and they were happy to defend deep and keep us at arms length protecting their advantage

As for my optimism for the season - currently I think it will be a struggle to make top 6 and I really just hope to see us start to gel and become a more balanced team with some power/pace on the counter. I want to see us look more effective and organised and I hope to see some more of our top youngsters make the breakthrough successfully

Beyond that I currently reserve judgement on my expectations for the season until I see where we stand after the window closes and we know which areas we have and haven't successfully addressed

A tad less optimistic now than I was on Saturday morning.
But then I was worryingly ecstatic
so a touch of realism doesn't go amiss.

More excited because of youth/ Academy opportunities
than confident or optimistic.
Defense looking better,
need some pace and creativity bringing in or preferably promoting.

Optimist!
But we need to bring in a couple of players, fast.
Why cant we buy players who go straight into the team? Other than alderweireld, all players we have bought seems to be for the future or players who are bought to give the ones already there competitions(yedlin, trippier, wimmer).
Have the same feeling with thin N`jie fella, if he comes.
Give us some quality signings!!!!!!

Still optimistic though.

All in all I have voted pessimistic. I don't think we have done enough to do any better this season personally. In fact, I think we are likely to finish 6th-8th and unlikely to reach a cup final.
