I trust some of the young players to step up for the first 4 matches of this season. We have WHU, QPR, and two matches against that Cypriot team before we play Liverpool, which is the match where we really will need people like Walker and Verts back.

I would start against WHU with: Hugo; Naughts, Kaboul, Dier, Rose; Capoue, Bentaleb; Lamela, Eriksen, Lennon; Ade

Unless Jan is ready to go next week, then him in for Dier.

Hopefully with a few of the WC / injured players getting some time off the bench.

Then between QPR and the two legs of EL, get them ready to start against LFC.

Hugo
Naughton Kaboul Verts (Dier if not ready) Rose
Capoue Holtby/Nabil
Lamela Eriksen Lennon (rotating)
Adebayor.

Good team considering lack of WC players etc. Musacchio would top it off though.

I was intrigued by the absence of Capoue and Mason today after they looked so good and started almost every other game of pre-season together. It's almost as though Poch had seen enough of the two to be convinced and chose to hold them back today with a view to starting them against WHam - partially to give others a chance today but also, perhaps, to put Big Fat Sam off the scent. Well, maybe anyway.

commentators said capoue had a "niggle", not sure about mason.

Ah. Still, seems odd that Mason didn't appear. Would be quite coincidental for them to be fine and starting every game together through the summer only to both pick up injuries right before the final game of pre-season.

Either way I'm fairly sure that Capoue will start against Ham. Just got this hunch that Mason might too.

Lloris, Naughton, Kaboul, Dier, Rose, Capoue, Bentaleb, Eriksen, Lennon, Lamela, Adebayor for me.

Omissions:

Walker - injured? Regardless, insufficient match practice.
Vertonghen - niggling injury and no preseason.
Davies - a tough decision to leave him out as Rose to my amazement has looked a completely different player in preseason. I would start Davies though if there are any worries over Rose's temperament.
Paulinho - no preseason.
Dembele - who cares.
Sandro - not quite sharp enough yet and Capoue has been immense.
Holtby - played really well today but he can't tackle for sh*t and would have been sent off and additionally yellow carded in a competitive game for his rash challenges. West Ham will be a midfield scrap, Holtby's not suited.
Soldado - I like him but Ade's the only one who's reliable at leading the line on his own and his physical presence will come in handy against the spammers thuggery.
Townsend - he's played well in spells but still prone to shooting instead of passing. Lennon has looked much improved and like his old self.

We could really do with another 3 friendly games against tough opponents before this game. I'm certain next season's pre-season will look a lot different than this one. Poch will want more games if we go back to the US, to compensate.

So is Mason back out of the squad picture after today's omission from the squad? Would be a shame if so.

Lloris

Naughton Kaboul Vertonghen Rose

Capoue Bentaleb

Lamela Eriksen Chadli

Soldado

Subs: Vorm, Dier, Sandro, Carroll, Townsend, Adebayor

When Adebayor's up to speed I'd have him there. But Soldado's worked hard in pre-season and looked lively. I'm taking on trust Vertongehn and Chadli's fitness (they should be OK as Belgium barely broke into a jog at the WC).

Think this will be the team that starts next week. Can't see how Vert will start if he wasn't ready to start last night.

Soldado has had a much better work out pre season than Ade obviously.

Holtby is not quite good enough to be one of the 'two' IMO.

Bentaleb does not have serious end product, nor does he have the ability to create clear cut chances against teams that park the bus. We saw this numerous times when Sherwood started him last season (remember Norwich away anyone?) Can anyone name one key pass that Bentaleb played yesterday in a game that was completely open? I can name a half dozen that Holtby played in the pre-season games thus far, and he also can strike the ball better than Bentaleb too. Against West Ham, we will need creativity to break them down, not sideways passing 50 yards away from goal. I also think Lennon, who will invariably start, will struggle against West Ham too, as they sure as hell won't be playing anything resembling the line that Schalke played last season. Can Lennon shoot from distance cutting in? Can he complete dribbles and whip in crosses when the pressure is on with both feet? I have serious doubts based on a HUGE sample size last season. The same thing goes for Townsend.

I'm frankly a little worried we will take too long to re-integrate the WC lads and will drop vital points against mediocre teams early in the season. People really have play down the ability of Paulinho and Dembele, but when they are healthy, they are very good players, better than the players we've seen in pre-season (with the exception of Capoue, possibly).

He's not in the team, in this system, to primarily do those things though.

Holtby in the 'two', like we saw against Toronto, second half, affected our shape hugely - in that we didn't have any, all over the shop despite assisting Townsend.

If Lewis is to start it has to be one of the front three.

why do you think soldado will start over ade? did you not think yesterday's lineups meant anything? you obviously did considering it's the exact lineup bar soldado(and capoue who was injured). if soldado was going to start this then we'd have seen him yesterday lining up alongside the likes of lennon, lamela and eriksen. instead though he played with townsend, kane, ceballos ... that says it all for me.
