He is in a win win to a certain extent. He gets picked up for $25M and earns a good sign on fee and if it doesnt work out he leaves for a free next season and a decent contract. I admire his professionalism. Always turned up and put in a shift. Great CB and highly underrated for his long passing. Will be sorry to see him leave. The management team dont seem too worried.

Assume any club has to pay us the 25 mill up front? Not in installments etc.

Would be a shame if we can't put that as a down payment on a replacement this summer.

I’m really disappointed to think that we’ll be losing Toby, who is such an important player for us but if that’s what’s going to happen, we must be proactive now.

I think we signed Sanchez 2 seasons ago with a view that Toby was unlikely to sign a new contract. IMO, the most sensible thing to do now would be to give Vertonghen a 2 years contract and sign Ake (left sided) from Bournemouth. This will give him chance to integrate properly into the squad/team over the next 2 seasons. We would then be thinking both short and long term in relation to central defence.

I don't think we will get an Alder replacement, I think personally that Poch see's Dier as a CB and will probably use Diers current situation as an opportunity to convince him to move back there, I think that'll be the short term solution, Foyth is the long term solution. I actually see Sanchez as Verts long term replacement, he's better on the left, you could argue that Sanchez is 3rd in the CB pecking order and might play ahead of Dier on the right side but long term I see Sanchez ending up our LCB.

I'd love us to get Saliba to add to the competition from the compilations I've seen, but that'd be next season.

Agree. There's also Davies that can fill in at CB

If he goes it’s very concerning we aren’t linked with a replacement

We’ve been linked with two highly rated teens but St Etienne want to keep Saliba for a season and the Monaco centre back has only played circa 20 professional games... very unfair to expect them to come in and hit the ground running. They’re both players for the next 18-36 months.

If Toby goes, and we don’t replace him, God help us. Vertonghen - great, Sanchez - very good/lots of promise. Foyth - bundles of talent but needs to beef up and it looks like he’ll be deployed at RB. Dier - meh, beyond his 1st season and 1 good season at DM he’s since regressed, too slow, cumbersome and error prone. An injury to Sanchez or Verts and we’re up shit creek without a paddle.

Not replacing Toby if he goes would be a massive mistake. We let in goals for fun in games against top opponents without him in the 17/18 season. Jan missed 3 months last season, we can't rely on him being healthy all season at his age anymore and I'm not comfortable going into games with Sanchez & Foyth just yet.

Not replacing Toby and not upgrading the full back area is crazy we are buying all these midfielders and expecting them not only to produce more goals but help reduce the amount we concede.

Jan picks up a bad injury we got Foyth right back rose left back Sanchez and dier . That ain’t going to win us things.

Can’t lose Toby and not replace him madness !!

What we lose mainly with toby for me are his comms and leadership qualities. We always look more organised and assured when he plays.

Wouldn't argue against us needing a replacement but i've long thought Dier should focus on being a defender tbh and i rate Sanchez and Foyth extremely highly, so with Davies also able to cover i don't think we'd be as badly off as you suggest - especially with a better shield in midfield next season. However, picking up a young talented centre back would be very welcome (although on limited evidence i'm not a massive fan of Ake tbh).

Sounds like you think Dier should be moved on because I don't see him getting much of a look in in midfield if we land our targets. It's a real head scratcher for Poch to work out what to do with him because it's pretty obvious how much he rates him. I personally think Poch will try him at CB again and hope that a fully fit Dier can recapture some form, but it does seem risky.

Central midfield - priority
Right back - priority
Centre back if Toby leaves - priority

Left back, back up keeper, wide forward/striker - not a pressing emergency

Granted we need to pick up young talent when it becomes available eg Clarke and Sessegnon but so far we only seem to be concentrating on central midfield. Toby could walk at any time, as ITK’s have said, clubs don’t need to talk to us if they trigger his release clause. Trippier is apparently going, leaving us with crazy Aurier and KWP.

We have replaced Toby at CB. We smashed our transfer record to do it, and we gave him two seasons of bedding in to boot. If TA leaves we will look to bring in another centre back, but it’s much more likely to be a Foyth-type signing profile-wise IMO.

I see Villa are buying Mings from Bournemouth for £25M ... That puts into perspective just how much we’ll lose on Tony should he go this summer. I don’t think Levy will entertain such a clause again... and clearly didn’t see the inflation in the price of decent defenders.

We were in a different position in the game then though, getting a player of his calibre we had to grease the wheels a bit, now I doubt we will have to.

It’s the inflation of players in general

To be fair, Toby was hardly hot property when we signed him and the 25m cluse was well over twice what we paid for him. Who could have predicted hisinfluence and improvement or the ludicrous hike in prices over his time with us?
