As much as I think we've got the players to step in and cope here, this is going to be a big blow for us. Jan is top class.

It's a blow for sure, but I think we're better equipped to deal with the loss while continue to play a back 3.

Massive massive blow. He's been brilliant recently.

At least the team have got a full week we prepare for city with whoever will be standing in.

I agree, I'd rather we stick to three at the back than revert to four, it gives us more cover and spreads the load.

Apparently the rest of the squad will be wearing 'RIP Vertongen's Ankle' on the front of their shirts before the City game this weekend.

Always going to pick up injuries, and however good he's been, he may be the one player that is slightly replaceable. E.g. We have no similar Rose,Kane, Eriksen replacements

One thing he is outstanding on this season is arial duels. There is nobody in the squad as effective in the air as him this season. Not long ago he won 11 arial duels in one single match, and he frequently wins as many or more as the 10 other Spurs players on the pitch put together. I'm not criticising Wimmer's performance last time, but this time, he is deputising for a far stronger CB, and I can only expect the gap to be noticeable.

That's actually been the game changer for me this season with Vertonghen, before that I've always felt he lacked dominance in the air and was susceptible to the odd hopeful long ball in transition which a lot of our opponents resort to. In fact when Wimmer came in last season I actually wanted him to stay alongside Toby due to his more traditional skillset.

This season Jan has became the complete defender however and will be a big loss, however if it is Wimmer I don't think we will lose much apart from a bit of extra quality on the ball. Davies has proven excellent there for Wales but could be targeted on crosses like we did to Azpilicueta to great effect.

As for the back 3 discussion, did Poch not go straight to the back 3 vs Arsenal after the Toby injury, putting Wimmer in? I would actually worry about going back to a back 4 as I still think Dier (would be harsh for Poch to drop him) struggles a little bit more there, and it pushes toby away from his favoured side. I love the 3 at the back though, and think it has emerged as the better fit for Poch's philosophy and I fully expect us to stick with it more often than not. I'm happy with both Davies and Wimmer in a back 3, no dramas.

Still get well soon Super Jan!

A major cloud on the horizon. Rose is on 8 yellows and when he reaches 10 will get a 2 game ban. Hopefully at least not before Liverpool away

Is there where we look at the fixture list and we encourage Rose to foul in a particular game or 2 to ensure his 2 game ban suits us or is that not in the spirit of the game ?

Sure, but it is a conscious thing that the club will take into consideration ?

Of course, if there's an opportunity for him to miss two relatively easy games, he'll do something like kick the ball away in the 90th minute to pick up a yellow. Every club does that.

I thought Rose got a fresh start after the new year, no?
no.

Its a 1 match suspension for 5 yellows before January 1, Its a 2-match suspension for 10 yellows by sometime in march(?), and then there is a 3-match suspension for 15 by the end of the season

ETA - the 10 card limit re-sets on the second Sunday in April

I had wanted him to get a yellow against WBA and then one against Shitty. He would then serve his 2-game suspension against Sunderland and 'Boro, coming back refreshed against Liverpool. Can't understand why he didn't handle a ball deliberately near the end of the last game.
