I kind of appreciate we are trying to buy smarter like brighton, brentford etc but the difference is they HAVE to do that, we have the luxury of money

I think Raya is the clearly better keeper, spend the money

Lloris : 8 penalty saves from 41 faced in 10 years of PL

Vicario : 8 penalty saves from 17 faced in serie A

Thats insane rate of 47% in top level football
Seems they take very poor penalties in Serie A. Not a market for strikers.

I jest!

Yes I was led to believe we had all but agreed a fee in the region of £33m. Clearly I jumped the gun. I'm all for returning to our old style of scouting and have no problem moving away from Raya. But it is strange when we were still talking to Brentford and I don't think we were miles apart.
Circa £33m for a prem proven GK entering their prime, with attributes Ange needs and homegrown to boot is a deal we should complete.
It is crucial we rebuild the defence wisely as it has been neglected for too long and is important to how Ange wants to set up.
Nothing against supplementing our main business with potential talent but it just feels a gamble we shouldnt be taking for a key position at such an important moment for our club.

Its almost like people don't trust that our scouts would scout a player and take in to account whether he'd be a good fit in the prem! Some of the best keepers in the league came from outside the league!!!

I think the key is that you apply the Brighton/Brentford approach but selectively make big money purchases.

What does a big money pruchase player look like? PL experience, proven quality, sought after player for a crucial position. Some would sayRaya ticks many of those boxes.

I think the likes of Birghton and Brentford have done great with limited resources, and I think we can learn a lot from the way they do business, but at the end of the day when the goons are bidding £90m for Rice and £60m for Havertz it's always going to be difficult to compete.

I'm just hoping this is a case where we have identified Vicario as a genuine talent that we can get and the funds freed up from not signing Raya are spent elsewhere. I think it would be really bad if we went into the summer looking at Raya, Maddison and Laporte and ended up with Vicario, Barnes and Guehi because they are the cheaper options and then the club tries to justify that by pointing to the new analytical scouting model. Like it or not there comes a point where you need to spend to compete.

The 'he's cheap so he must be shit' take really is beyond stupid.
I'm not sure I've seen anyone with that take only people concerned we may be going for the cheap option again. That may or may not be the case but is a valid concern given our history of doing just that.

I think it’s a matter of buying smart relative to our budget. What constitutes a smart signing for us would potentially be a big move for Brighton and Brentford.

These teams have shown there’s value out there for under £10 million. So would follow there’s value out there our equivalent of £10 million. A bit like Ange getting bargains for Celtic, whilst those players might not cut it for us I would hope that Ange would have known about other underrated players that were out of Celtic’s budget but are now within ours - who would be good enough for us.

It's hilarious.

All this, we must follow the Brentford/Brighton model of uncovering hidden gems through smart data modelling. And then when it appears we are doing that, we get "f*%k you Levy going for the CHEAP OPTION!"
