I’ve been a Spurs fan for almost 20 years and it’s pretty remarkable that this is only the third time we’ve been looking for a new long term first keeper since then.

Gomes and Lloris and that’s it (Friedel was always going to be a short term stop gap due to his age).

Buffon on Vicario: "He might become even better than me, he's generational".

However Buffon described Vicario as "extraordinary" and he said that he's "the future of the national team".

That sounds positive...
I’m not sure these quotes are real?

I'm sure I'll get neg repped for this but this transfer is giving me Gollini vibes.

Can anyone reassure me (with reasoning) that I'm wrong to think this?
Sure. When we signed Gollini he had lost his place at Atalanta and they wanted to sell. Gollini doesn't have the same sort of hype that Vicario does in Serie A and top serie A teams never considered Gollini as a n.1. The level in which the two players are considered is not comparable.

Raya’s key advantages seem to be PL experience and Home Grown.

Technically, I am not seeing anything significantly better in his favour. Long passing maybe? But does Ange want his keepers kicking long very often?

So I am not sure those advantages justify playing 15m-20m more and I’d much rather that saving is applied to getting the best CBs we can.

If there were significant technical advantages with Raya then of course we should be coughing up what’s needed.

Oh bugger ! So i watched a video last night where the same guy was saying that Vicario came out almost identical to Raya on his scouting tool, and i remember watching the original video of him using the scouting tool for Raya when an unknown goalie kept getting highly ranked......and i put 2 + 2 together !!!!!

Is there an 'idiot' rating on here i could give myself ?

In an effort to redeem myself , here is a video from the Italian Football Podcast , made 2 months ago, where they are discussing Vicario - very positively !

Thanks for posting that. Very interesting how highly they rate him.

Who cares if he’s cheaper than another keeper. The fact that our chief scouts has identified him and our manager is on board with it should be all that matters.

This is not meant personally towards you but I really don’t get why people are trying to turn everything into a negative situation. Don’t get me wrong, if our ITKs all came out and said this was Levy pulling rank to sign against the wishes of the scouts and manager, then we have every right to criticise.

anyway, I’ll reserve judgment on how good or poor he’s been once he’s played a season for us, until then - great it looks like we’re signing a keeper.
Just on the face of it going from a high profile GK that everybody knows that was one of the best in the PL last season to a keeper for less than half the price, from a forieng league, who nobody here has heard of is going to raise some eyebrows.

Add that to our recent history in the transfer market and I think it's obvious people are going to react negatively.

Hopefully we have turned a corner and our scouting department have found a gem. I hope for his sake that's the case because if he get's off to a rocky start things will get ugly.

As is the "I haven't heard of him, despite me not watching Serie A therefore he must be shit"
I think people look down on Serie A too yet we've signed 3 quality players from there and they had a team in each of the 3 European finals. At the end of the day hardly anyone knew Raya before he went to Brentford either.

Agree but I guess the issue may be that if we don’t recruit a HG keeper, it’s in another area where we potentially need to balance the HG quota.

You’re right though, we obviously have some recruitment planned and if it was that critical, we’d be more flexible on Raya’s price; we seem to be looking elsewhere, which implies either it’s not that critical or we’re looking to leverage our position and threaten to walk on the transfer.

Just hoping we get it right one way or the other!

It's such a massively important position to fill.

You are basically looking at the backbone of your defence for the next 7-8 years and it is hugely disruptive if it does not work out.

Not a situation to pinch pennies in - I really hope everybody at the club is really confident this will work out and we are not just going for the cheaper option.

I meant recent as in last 10-15 years....and more specifically around the club going for cheaper option trying to be cute and it backfiring spectacularly.

We have done better in the last few windows. Let's hope this is another example of that.

Two big reservations about him - mostly stemming from the fact that I have obviously never seen him play other than the highlight reels in the last 48 hours.

- He seems a great shot stopper - but doesn't take much care of where the ball rebounds too (often parried out into danger)?
- None of the highlight reels show him catching /coming for crosses / commanding his area? I think this is imperative to alleviate pressure on our defence.

Hs anyone watched him a little more consistently to allay those fears?

So it’s mainly down to his price and the fact he’s come from a foreign league. Other than that have you actually seen him play live?

we’ve spent lots on high profile names like Tungay, Saldardo etc that supporters were creaming about on this forum and they flopped. In fact our biggest transfer flops have been large fees so I don’t really get your point. No one knows how each signing will turn out. You can’t judge a player by their fee.
I get that people want Raya and the HG element. I want us to sign him and will be slightly disappointed if we don’t sign him but I’m not going to be negative over signing another keeper that I know naff all about, just because he’s cheaper.

is there a reason things like this confirmation aren't going onto the SC ITK thread?
I think we skipped the ITK for weeks on end, and moved straight to the "who the fuck is he, he's signed" phase
