Realistically we are not in the race for any proven strikers that become available, even the likes of Benteke may be out of our financial reach if it becomes a bidding war. So what strikers are a possibility although they may be more of a gamble, but still have the potential to be a success-
Finnbogason 24 Heerenven 29 app 23 goals
Bony 24 Vitesse 27 app 31 goals
Castaignos 20 Twente 22 app 12 goals
Fischer 18 Ajax 20 app 9 goals
Icardi 20 Sampdoria 21 app 9 goals
Aubameyang 23 St Etienne 31 app 19 goals

I am not saying these are the solution, just that they should be considered.
Any other suggestions please?

Unless we can get rid of Adebayor we wont be signing another striker of note. We cant afford to be paying Ade and another striker £100K a week for one of them to always be on the bench. If Ade goes we may splash up to big money on fee and wages on a new man. If we are stuck with him however, it'll be bargain shopping Sig, Dempsey and Holtby style for our new striker.

Or, more radically, no shopping but raised from within. I do wonder if this is more than half the plan...

Long term, maybe yes, but not for next season imo.

Next season candidates would be :

Jonathan Obika - So far proved to be good as a sub in Championsip. A first team sub at best, not a starter ?

Harry Kane - Awful season due to injuries, no further forward than at start. 3rd striker at best (but best position is as a support striker in a 442 formation which Spurs rarely play)

Cameron Lancaster - out injured for a year, so who knows what striker will come back. If fit, likely to be a League 1 or Championship loan ?

Souleymane Coulibaly (aged 18) - 6 or 7 sub appearances in the Italian equivalent of League 1, simply is not enough to immediately jump into Spurs first team.

Shaq Coulthirst (age 18) - just making his way at u 21 level, again simply not good enough to immediately jump into Spurs first team. Maybe a loan to a Championship club next season at best.

IMO we will buy one decent striker - but will not be a wold class one : the money simply not there and as RJ1882 says we will need to sort out whether Adebayor wants to stay and play or is not interested, in which case selling will be a challenge. Also need to consider Defoe and maybe Dempsey's position.

thanks for this breakdown. it may be that we have to be patient and wait for them (gulp). and manage with teetering on 4th/5th. the new austerity. but more romantic if/when it pays off!

Soldado is the striker I would absolutely love. Not sure if that would count as unrealistic or not. They don't look likely to get CL

Yeh I have been watching. His movement is top drawer. Constantly making intelligent runs. Love him. And Banega too

We have to be very careful about which strikers we buy. The system AVB wants to play requires a striker with very specific skills, neither Ade or Defoe fit the bill and we better make sure we don't buy someone else who is going to flop. I think AVB knows what he wants but that means Daniel Levy and Tim Sherwood accepting it.

Christ, it's going to be another depressing transfer window.

I couldn't disagree more with the OP. I think we'd be bang in the race for any proven strikers that become available. Remy, Benteke, Michu are all realistic targets should they become available. Wether we would be actually interested in any of them is of course another matter. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see one of the three i've mentioned at Spurs next season.

Commentators in the Sociedad v Valencia game mentioned that we had scouts at the game. Probably there to watch Soldado in particular esp as Antione Griezmann (talented winger we have been linked to )was suspended. Soldado would be one of the best strikers we could buy on our budget. Relief to know that we are looking at strikers.

Maybe I'm crazy but I think Ricky Lambert would be a great option assuming we could get at the right price. Strong as an ox, scores goals and I've been pleasantly surprised how good his link up play is. Crucially will always give everything and fight for the cause (take note Ade). Proven in the premiership unlike the majority of options usually banded about. He is 31 so only a couple of seasons left in him but would buy us time to bring in and bed in a younger riskier option. Surely he couldn't turn down the opportunity either.
