Berbatov replaced by Campbell
The season 07/08 we arguably had the most lethal strike partnership taking shape in the Premier League. Berbatov and Keane. Levy then proceeded to sell them both in the same window. And a lot of members on hear think we have the best chairman in the league. Spursy ! (n)

Bentley was the biggest waste of money for me. Hopefully Lamela won't become the choice when the question is asked in a few years time.

I'm pretty sure we paid City around 6m in transfer fees and didn't they only cover one year?

£5m transfer fee, £4m signing on fee to line Adebayor's pockets (nearly £1m per league goal that season). Not sure how long City contributed to his wages, may have been two seasons as that was how long he had left on his contract when we signed him permanently.

The worst part of that signing was that the majority of people on here had reservations (to put it lightly) for the same reasons why Arsenal fans were laughing at us and Man City fans were delighted to get rid of him. And those who didn't want him were proven correct.

Darren Bent, and by some distance. An absolutely stupid purchase considering we already had serious depth up front and it was at the other end where we needed reinforcements.

Bent was a completely unnecessary signing like you say given the forwards we had at the time and how Jol had been asking for the defence to be strengthened (something which was immediately afforded Ramos), but if you consider it on return then Bentley was by far the worst signing.

At least we recouped probably everything we paid for Bent, and for a couple of seasons he was a one goal in three games striker (and one of those seasons he had Berbatov, Keane and Defoe for competition). We got nothing back for Bentley and he contributed very little when he did play (six goals, nine assists in about 60 games).

Unfortunately Lamela's five goals in 55 games, and considerably more money, is making him look a worse signing than Bentley.

I would say that since 2001,when Levy took over, we have made very few signings of players that would be classed top quality.
Carrick,Berbatov,Modric,VDV,Bale and Lloris..thats about it really.
There have been a few others that have been pretty good/decent but not in their class.
Poor show really for the amount of purchases we made since then.

But if we decided to give up on Lamela we would probably make a good chunk of the transfer fee back, at least half, probably more. Not loan him out to some shit Russian team then release him for nothing.

Buying Saha and Nelsen when we were 3rd in Jan few years back, with what a 12 point lead over the Gooners?

I think Saha was a decent capture for the money. He scored 4 goals in 12 games and, to my memory, didn't cost us any games or miss any good chances (that I can recall). Think it's a shame he's so poorly thought of.

This.
Lost our best player, and the lateness of the deal effectively forced us to be a testing ground for one of United's prospects (with no option to buy if he happened to be any good). An awful piece of business. Wasn't that the season where we got 2 points from our first 8 games? Levy well and truly fucked up with that one.

In a way, getting Frazier Campbell in led to a series of events which brought CL football to the lane, depending on how optimistic/open-minded you are.

Unfortunately Lamela's five goals in 55 games, and considerably more money, is making him look a worse signing than Bentley.

Bentley played at RB on occasion, too, which impacts his record somewhat.

Kaboul could be up there if he hadn't have provided the cross for crouch which got us CL football. He's been crap since Harry left, though.

As much as I like to defend Ade, I can't help but wonder what could have been if we actually could have got Tevez a few months later instead. I still think he's a bit of a jinxer, as he's played for some of the best clubs in Europe but still hasn't helped any of those teams achieve any of their targets - he got a Copa del Rey medal with Madrid, but that's the only trophy he's won in his career, as far as I know.

I remember Bentley playing at RB once against Aston Villa, but that's about it. He certainly didn't play there enough for it to make any difference to his record.

To be fair to Bentley, that goal against the scum, and his post match interview after was nearly worth the 15 million

Dempsey replacing VDV on deadline day. It smacked of appeasement, very little thought had gone into it and he was completely unsuited to us

No one mention Richards?

Bent we eventually made a profit on and he scored a few goals, so not on the list for me. Bently is though. Bobby unfortunately because I think there is a good player in there. Hopefully can get something back for him. Pauly a waste. Still waiting for Lamela to turn up from Roma. Heard he's quite good.
