Talent-wise, I don't think this squad comes close to the squad at the peak of the Redknapp era. When you look back at the calibre of players we had at that period it's criminal that they didn't win anything and underachieved in the league

The squad we have now is more well rounded and so well drilled- we don't see the major drop off in performance or style of play when we make changes, the players that come in play more or less the same way and to a similar standard. The squad has been moulded and constructed to a strict remit to implement the managers plan. And the mentality and togetherness of this group is a cut above anything else I've experienced in my time as a Spurs fan, and I feel they've really re-established a connection to the fans

So in short, it's not the 'best' squad we've ever had, but I wouldn't swap it for any other in my time as a supporter

Wilson is just getting back from injury and Bournemouth were reportedly not interested in discussing a deal for less than £25m.

Benteke cost £27m and is on a high wage and the money being asked for Lukaku was ridiculous.

Were we going to spend £30m on a sub? I doubt it. A Dutch international and last season's top scorer in the league doesn't seem a terrible purchase. Especially as he appears to have the skillset required to be backup for Kane.
Not so much of a sub now tho is he?? Not until Xmas anyway.

The only fly in your corretly positive ointment is what we are reported to be able to pay in terms of players salary.

We know that lots of players demand 200K plus a week wages these days and who can blame them if someone will pay it but this will always stop us getting the Bale/Modric/Aguero/Giroud being mentioned in this thread.

I cant be anything than delighted with where we are at the moment though, I really like how our club is doing things at the moment I just hope that should Poch take us to greater heights and be lured elsewhere we recognise the sense in this model.

I love that we are playing away in Moscow in the CL, the game is in the balance and he brings on Harry Winks, it would be easy to overlook what a masterstroke moves like this are, the incentive these things give the entire playing staff must be huge.

What way to get the boys working.

I think that will come, i agree with every you say and it's actually amazing how well we do with low wages and the calibre of player we have at the club. But with this new stadium and the extra revenue and profit we will generate from that, our brand will increase massively, having the best stadium in England and one of the best in Europe will get you noticed every where, i'm sure we will be able to pay the larger wages in the near future. But i never want us to go crazy like United, 300k on Rooney, that would hurt a lot.

I agree the type of wages paid are obscene and probably immoral but as long as they are comparative to income, as they are now, then it's not a problem and will be necessary to genuinely compete regularly at the top.

Unfortunately it's where football's at

Agree.

The likes of Modric, Carrick, Bale, Berbatov, VdV were more talented. Both Jol and especially Redknapp did underachieve with the players they had imo.

But the players we have now have a far better mindset, the squad is much younger and fitter and Pochettino has ensured that they toe the line. No mavericks or trouble makers. It's a great squad.

Is it?

Let's take the 11-12 team:

Friedel
Walker- Kaboul- King- Assou-Ekotto
Parker-Modric
Lennon- Van der Vaart- Bale
Adebayor

Lloris > Friedel

Walker (now) > Walker (then)

Toby and Jan > Kaboul and King

Rose > Assou-Ekotto

Dier and Dembele < Parker and Modric

Son > Lennon (that could be up for debate though)

Eriksen < Van der Vaart

Alli <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Bale

Kane > Adebayor

So I'd say, on an individual level, 6 or 7 players in this team are better than their 11-12 counterparts.

If we signed Tielemans, what the fuck would we do with Winks?

The individual spark who can pull something out of the bag regardless of the situation. Bale is that player who did that under AvB. The type of player who is not so dependent on the system to show he is top quality.

On a general point some players look (much) better than they are in a certain set-up which suits them but taken out of that they struggle and their true level is seen. Nothing wrong with that at all provided you have the coaches who can relay that on the pitch - as we have at Spurs.

There may be a few Spurs players who wouldn't replicate their form elsewhere. When your team mates buy into the system, and you understand each others traits, movements and passages of play become habitual the whole is greater than the simple sum of its parts. That's down to great coaching, an ethos and synergy among everyone. That is better than spending tons of money to upgrade a whole team. It's more admirable and the success it can bring is much sweeter.

Bale in a pretty cautious system with AvB was POTY, in a counter-attacking side under Redknapp he was flying, in a Madrid side who are expected to dominate he's a star player and in a Wales team where there is not much to work with meaning he's asked to graft and be a leader he is outstanding.

That's the type of player who would elevate this club to the next level quickly. Or we trust in the coaches and this group to continue their natural progression.

Either way this club is going places.

I couldn't disagree more. Yes probably the 2 best players over the 2 sides come from 11-12, but overall only King, Modric, Bale and vdV would get into our current side, and if Poch was the manager you could take Rafa out of that list straight away.

Agree with all that except VDV

VDV costs you in away games from lack of running, mobility and fitness.

Early crosses into the area.

Simples. Watch Walker when he breaks, he pauses, looks up, steps back and slams the ball into the left back's knees for a throw in.
