As I said throughout the early summer, he's a good 'middle third' left back. Neat and tidy on the ball and with a good left foot. However he doesn't constantly bomb forward and provide the width and defensively he has a lot to learn. As I also said at the time, he's not an upgrade on Rose, about the same level of prospect and both have things to learn, and in many ways Rose (if he sorted out his final ball) would arguably be a better fit.

Some were massively over-rating him. He was a solid addition who can improve in time. Wouldn't expect a huge amount straightaway though.

He wasn't very good at Partizan, but he's a young player and he'll get his chances. As the team hopefully settles more, it'll be a better climate for him to perform in. For now, I think we should just be happy that Rose has upped his game, instead of automatically thinking that if Davies is not playing instead of Rose, he automatically has to be crap.

I have never been a DOF or coach etc.....but i would never have bought Davies, certainly not for 10m...Baldini must have something very big on DL to be still in a job.....he should not be allowed anywhere near our transfers after most of his buys the last 2 years.
Broomfield is head of scouting now, so would have had just as much of a say. Worrying.

He is very young and is not being thrown in at the deep end straight away. We are a whole 5 league games in to the season, I think by xmas we will know more about our squad.

I think he's a victim of the fact that we haven't really got our team sorted yet.

I don't think Poch has been able to much vaunted 'system' in place yet whether due to time or due to lack of personnel (no Walker, Fazio, Vertonghen, Stambouli, Soldado etc) so we've gone with the tried and tested Rose instead (who is also perhaps a tad less attacking and therefore fits our more conservative approach so far).

You would think that having chased him for a while and then spending 10m on him that he is in our plans.

I just don't think the plans are really in place yet. Maybe we've temporarily misplaced them.

Davies' brilliant set up and goal @ 5:48 v Scum.
Maybe he could repeat this against them next Saturday? (Await optimistic ratings)

No point judging Ben Davies at all at this stage. He started the season as 2nd choice behind rose & we've hardly seem him yet. Personally as a 10mil signing with league experience I would have backed him & played him, instead he didn't even make the squad yesterday so confidence could be low. As someone else said he seems a victim at the moment of our lack of plans defensively, I do expect to see him in the team once things settle down.
He's young with a long term contract so plenty of time to make an impact at the club.

I don't think pace is an issue by the way, from what I've seen (for Wales last week & against arsenal for Swansea) his delivery is good as is his fitness. He looks more of a Gary Neville type full back - not blessed with blistering pace but has good delivery from the wide areas. Fine with me. We just need more pace coming from the wide forward areas.

Hang on, was Davies second fiddle at Swansea last season? Or are you saying in Taylor's current form?

Taylor was injured for most of the 2012-13 with a broken ankle and struggled to make the side last season but I got the impression that Garry Monk wasn't overly upset with letting Davies go because Taylor could easily fit back into the left back slot.

I like him. He's only 21. I think in the long term he will be our starting left back once we get a settled system and team.

Where in thee FOOK is this guy? What is the bloody well point in signing a player if they're not even gonna get on the bench? How about pick Vertonghen from the start instead of having him take up a place on the bench where Davies could sit. He not injured is he? Spurs vs WBA Team news didn't reflect that on OS. I want to see what this guy can do for us, he's good at going forward too right? He'd better start against Forrest, perfect game for him to showcase himself. The man will be regretting leaving Swansea, he should never have left.

Because he's young, British, and will be worth more when we sell him. It's not like Poch personally picked him out and shouted "Him!" - we wanted him for the exchange. He'll get games eventually, otherwise his value will drop.

I think as a young player with potential he could well go on to be our starting left back but he is still young and you can see that in the positional errors he makes from time to time.

Is he what we needed? its not as if Rose is a top LB and Davies was brought in as his understudy to learn off him. What we needed, and for 10m could have got, was a proven quality LB, maybe a little older even but one that would do a job and be able to play in Poch's system, now we have 2 ordinary LB'S who might improve, thats no good to us now is it?....oh well next season, again.

What do you like about him ? his pace? passion? tough tackling? attacking prowess? great passing? what is it you like about him that gives you belief he will be our future LB? being 21 doesn't count alone btw.

I've said it elsewhere, but he doesn't look a good fit to Poch's system to me. In fact, while I don't rate Danny Rose highly, he's a far better fit, and it makes me question just why we signed Davies.
Poch likes his centre-backs to spread wide, his defensive midfielder to drop in and the two full-backs to play like wingers. Walker is suited this, Rose to a certain degree is - high energy, pace, attacking instincts. Davies seems a more solid, defensive player who passes it short and isn't blessed with exceptional pace. Dier, certainly isn't suited to the system on the opposite side, but then needs must.
Davies looks an odd signing at £10 million to me.

It seems yet again we are signing players for the sake of it rather than what the actual manager needs.

Exactly. Some on this thread question the mentality of others who have posted negative stuff ... I don't think the negative stuff is meant toward Davies, per se, it's more frustration at exactly this. The fact that LB was a position that HAD to be sorted & clearly it wasn't

& what makes it doubly worse to my mind is this idiotic standoff we have with BAE. Whatever the story is, fact remains that he's a veteran player who's been at Spurs for (relatively) donkeys years, played for us in many NLD's, a cup final iirc, champions league matches, played under King & with bale & Modric ... & yet in a time where we're crying out for some steel he's not even named on the squad, in a position we've known for ages were dicey in & that we've not visibly improved

Agreed, there's no reason in the world why Ekotto shouldn't be in with a chance to play just like the rest of them.

Best game for us thus far, last night. Got forward very well and has a sweet left foot on him and seems to really get hold of his crosses and whip them in with good velocity and accuracy right into the danger area. For all his recent developments, this is what Rose has been lacking.

If Davies can continue to look as composed as he did last night he can push rose and then they can really start to properly scrap for the position which can only be good for us.
