of course, I suspect we have a much nastier history, so there's probably more white guilt.

not really, just a few comes to mind. we certainly taunt other teams and fans. its usually along the lines of "you guys suck" or making fun of some local stereotype. in general, racist stuff is strictly off limits. chanting and singing isnt nearly as developed as it is there.

Steve Kerr was a collegiate and pro basketball player who's father was a POW in Vietnam. When he was in college apparently some opposing fans thought it would be funny to taunt him about it. the fall-out was huge - it was headline stuff on ESPN.

IMO, the Adebayor song is as bad as singing 'Does your boyfriend know you're here' to Brighton fans, or 'you're just a town full of pikeys' or 'the wheels on your house go round and round' to Southend fans. Its not mentioning colour, its just associating a person with a location.

All of the chants you suggest are playing on the CLUBS' location, you're not actually suggesting that it refers to any individual player. The Adebayor song singles one man out, which instantly takes on different connotations, regardless of whether you think it's racist. Which it is.

It's not racist, i have plenty of black mates and they class it as banter, the song just picks up on an aspect from his childhood it's no different to calling lampard "fat frank" because he used to be fat. Banter is part of being a football supporter and is all a laugh. I see plenty of black spurs fans joining in with the song at games.

There ya go! THAT could be our song for Jenas.

"Jen-AS! Cha-cha-cha!!"

On the racism issue - if in doubt - DON'T shout it out.

'Sit down you paedphile' to Wenger - we like that one tho yea? Worse the Adebayor song.

Or is it because (and im throwing this in here for discussion purposes only) that Adebayor is of a Black origin and Mr Wenger is not that we class it as a RACIST song?

The pc brigade (usually Caucasians who dont have any black friends) will just continue to ignore this point. :)

First of all, uttering the phrase 'I have plenty of black mates' is setting you up for trouble with some people, but…

You're right, in essence, IF Adebayor's dad washed elephants. That's the only was it's picking on an aspect of his childhood.
Do you know that Adebayor's dad washed elephants? If he didn't, then it is.

racist or not, singing it makes you sound fucking thick.

like really, really, dribble-down-the-front-of-your-shirt, knuckles-scraping-the-floor, look-at-my-spastic-song-that's-not-even-funny-about-a-player-we-basically-wish-played-for-us thick. and you sing it when we're not playing arsenal. how shit do you want to make us look? hi, we're tottenham, we prefer arsenal doing badly to us doing well.

i always like to think spurs have a better class of fan than most clubs, but it's the same spread of morons that grace upton park and stamford bridge every saturday.

 you obviously do not have any friends of a different ethnic background. Would you have prefered i used the word coloured instead of black, because sir that is far more racist and something my friends of "african descent" dispise with a passion!!! Get a grip mate.

Being as his dad is dead it's pretty certain he doesn't actually wash anything but we do seem to have this history for singing songs about the goons don't we?

I can remember the Charlie Nicholas one, there's the Wenger one, this one, stand up if you hate Arsenal and I bet there's plenty more i've missed

That's why we've a repertoire of pretty shit songs really, we're all too busy standing up to show how much we hate Arsenal.

Misunderstanding bud.

I simply meant that one of the most uttered lines by closet racists is "I have a lot of black friends", as if that makes up for anything they subsequently say, so the alarms bells go off.

I have no problem with you saying 'black'. I have friends of all ethnic backgrounds, I just don't choose to single them out by where they're from or what they look like. Weird, hey?

Surely the song is only deemed racist because it has been labelled as such? Think about the content, theres nothing more racist than any other song. The fact people link "his dad washes elephants" to being racist is racist itself.

In singing it, we don't place any racial meaning on the line. It's those who perceive the line as racist that make it so - political correctness forces this issue. The psychology of racism is in us all, but the line, if broken down, actually has no racial intent. It's humour.

Ok appologies.

I'm not singling anyone out as a) i didn't create the song b) i don't sing it. I just don't agree that it is racist and class it as banter and not as serious as many are making it out to be on here. Whether or not racists often use the pharse "i have a lot of black mates" doesn't concern me either i was purely disclosing the fact that of the black mates i have none of them believe this to be racist and surely they are more qualified than anyone to offer an opinion on this?!?

That's why we've a repertoire of pretty shit songs really, we're all too busy standing up to show how much we hate Arsenal.

See i think we have a great repertoire of songs/chants.

We have more than most. Teams like West Ham who only have Bubbles annoy the fuck out of me cos that's all you hear throughout the match. We have Glory Glory, Spurs Go Marching In, If You Know Your History, Yid Army, Can't Smile Without You, We Are Tottenham, MEHSTGOTCAWHL, We're The Park Lane/Shelf Side, Who Let The Yids Out, Numerous Chas & Dave songs from the finals, the usual stuff like 'By Far The Greatest Team...., Juande Ramos' Blue & White Army etc etc.

All of those are sung regularly. We also have a few anti Arsenal songs, which for me is fine, because they're our rivals and if they're funny/witty/offensive (in a non-ist way) then great.

The Wenger bus is coming and all the kids are running...
With a packet of sweets and a cheeky smile...
Sit down you paedophile...
Van Persie, when the girl says no, Molester...
& if you are an Arsenal fan surrender or you'll die....
& we will fight forever more, because of Boxing Day...
Stand up if you hate Arsenal...

Some people will find them offensive and that's fine, because they are. For me personally, i don't mind these. Especially in a pub beforehand where they're usually first aired. My gripe is why the fuck do we sing these anti Arsenal songs at the Lane when we're not playing them. I can understand maybe if it's the foillowing week and people are getting excited but generally it just pisses me off. I don't mind 'Are you watching Arsenal' if we're lifting the cup or if we're hammering a team that beat Arsenal the previous week, but how often does that happen...

The chant that pisses me off the most is Stand up if you hate Arsenal. I know it's mostly done now to piss off the stewards, but why can't people just sing Stand up if you love Tottenham. It's so fucking easy to change the words from an anti Arsenal song into a pro Spurs one. Again, if we were playing Arsenal, different matter, but it's sung every fucking week without fail and i always try to sing Love Tottenham instead and a few people do join in, but it gets drowned out with the Arsenal hatred.
