It's not racist, i have plenty of black mates and they class it as banter, the song just picks up on an aspect from his childhood it's no different to calling lampard "fat frank" because he used to be fat. Banter is part of being a football supporter and is all a laugh. I see plenty of black spurs fans joining in with the song at games.
There were black people who laughed at Bernard Manning's Jokes, it doesn't mean he wasn't a fat racist ****.

The pc brigade (usually Caucasians who dont have any black friends) will just continue to ignore this point. :)

I didn't know someone had to go out and get black friends in order for their point to be valid.

The adebayor song is not racist it's just using a stereotype the same as reffering to liverpool fans as drug dealers & saying that northeners beat their wifes. Not saying that these are not offensive stereotypes but its not racism.

and that stereotype is based on his race, ergo...

Of course the song is racist.

It's not racist in an overt "we hate black people" way. It's racist in a lazy "Africa is a backwards shithole where people have nothing better to do with their time than wash elephants" way, as though there are no computer programmers or architects or bus drivers or any sign of civilization in Africa, and people in just sit around patting elephants and saying hello to Tarzan as he swings by. It's a lazy, rubbish way of putting down an African player. And race plays a part: If Adebayor were a white-south African, I doubt the chant would mention washing elephants.

There will be people who will say "Oh, it's only about washing elephants. There's nothing offensive about washing elephants." Well, there's nothing offensive about counting money, but if it featured in a chant about a Jewish player, I'd be pretty upset because it perpetuates the stereotypes that Jews are greedy, just as the Adebayor chant perpetuates the stereotype that Africa is backwards.

As far as racist chanting goes, it's pretty tame and you hear a lot worse in grounds up and down the country, but pretending it's harmless fun is crap. There's always some moron who moans about political correctness and probably harks fondly back to the time when you could harmlessly make monkey chants every time a black player touched the ball.

Nah, Chelski's manager is a Jew, and the owner is a Russian, there's enough material there that even our Yiddo stance will see some anti-semetic comments come to light.

Just chanting "You're owned by a Russian and run by a Jew!" might even be enough to get you kicked out, even though its just stating the truth.
What is happening to Spurs:eek:mg:..?

Seriously, this really doesn't make sense!

You're a troll, aren't you?

If you want to actually argue your case and explain why it's not racist, go ahead. If you just want to randomly insult anyone who disagrees with you, then you're just making yourself look like a cock.

You don't get it, do you? This isn't about one stupic chant. It's about the fact that even now, after all the abuse black players have suffered, you think it's fine to casually stereotype a black player as someone whose parents wash elephants. Given the massive history of racism in English football, where black players were treated like shit and compared to monkeys, it does seem a bit fucking stupid to start a chant about a black african player that talks about his dad washing elephants.

When white players across the world suffer the same levels of prejudice and hatred that black players have endured you can get back to me about white English players suffering from "his dad works in a chipshop" abuse.

Do we dislike General Levy cos we dont agree with him?

Pretty sad really. I think those that think it is racist should all hold hands, and those that dont should all hold hands, and lets stop throwing our toys out of the pram.

Lots of over sensitive people in here.

My opinion, the song is catchy (or should i say the tune), the player is a twat but thats just cos he plays for them, its not big or clever, its banter, but it certainly isnt racist.

Please dont ban me from your buddy lists or call me a **** of the highest order, please dont, i'll be ever so upset.......

Elephants come from Africa. African people; believe it or not are actually all different colours, shapes and sizes. Therefore if Adebayour was white, the chant would be the same stereotying as if he were black.

The counting money = greeding Jew example was hilarious. You are up there with Sacha Baron Cohen as a comic genius.

Yes, Africans come in all shapes and colours, but Adebayor happens to be black and there is a history of racism against black people in English football. Therefore a song that equates black africans with washing elephants is definitely racist. I don't remember any white south african players facing songs about washing elephants.

Southampton fans famously called Mido a shoebomber. I'm sure that General Levy could argue that shoebombers come in all shapes, sizes and colours, and the fact that Mido is an Egyptian Muslim Arab was merely a coincidence. After all, there's no racism in English football and anyone who says otherwise is a politically correct "idiot".

The Adebayor song isn't the worst example of racism that you'll hear, but to repeat myself, given the history of racism against black players in England, it's a bloody stupid thing to sing. Just this week Blackpool fans were arrested for singing racist songs about black players, so the idea that chanting about a black African player who parents "wash elephants" is harmless seems a bit hollow.

And I don't ignore people whose views I disagree with. This is a discussion board, after all. But I'm tempted to ignore people who don't even bother entering into a discussion and just whine and insult anyone who disagrees with them.

Aye.

No, I always considered it racist as well as the rest. Maybe it's just me, but I always associated the line, "hanging from a tree" with lynchings. Now, it may just be that tree rhymes with HIV, but how many people use a tree to hang themselves. They're usually used to hang others. Anyway, I've always found that line a little distasteful for the reasoning already given.

Ok I haven't read the next two pages so someone else might have said the same, but I always associated the "hanging from a tree" to refer to him topping himself as the song started at the same time as he disappeared to Belgium, and there were rumours of some tabloid printing a "Sol is Gay" story and people were worried that he may kill himself.

That's what everyone says in the beginning. The idiocy wears thin, though.

Besides, there's already been a thorough discussion on the subject.

Or, indeed, dogging a fled horse.

Or expecting someone who would need an intensive six-month study course to qualify as a Savoy cabbage to be able to follow a moderately sophisticated argument.

Out of interest would the song be deemed non racist if the chant were 'his dad washes Indian elephants'?

It's clear the song is dumb as are the people who sing it but is it really meant to be racist? I think racism is not on the minds of those who sing it.
