Oh Christ.

Can we all just agree not to sing this song? Surely even those defending it now realise that it is unacceptable, don't they?

Not racist? Get a grip! That's why it's "funny"!

"Oi Adebayor you f*cking elephant washer!" Acceptable?

Utterly brainless.. how does stating that a clearly racist song is racist have anything to do with "PC".. especially in the tone that you imply by using the word brigade ie: its a bunch of over protective , overtly do gooding , bleeding heart liberals

Just because the odd black person sings it doesn't make it non racist, it could simply be that those singing it are too fucking thick to know what they're singing, or because they want to be part of the crowd. Either way the song is racist, the club think it's racist , anyone with half a brain think its racist and you wanking on about your mates not thinking so , black or otherwise, isn't going to change that

Reading you post m8, you should remember everyone entitled to their opinion, and insulting them because they have a different opinion to validate your arguement is silly!
I dont think the song rascist!
I also know ,what rascist song is ,after i remember thousand of spurs fans sing "whos that up a tree its cyrille, its cyrille".I didnt join in with that.
Regis being a black spurs fan,who played for West Brom in the 80s.

Im not saying its a good thing to sing the song, but I stand by my opinion that it isnt racist. There is no direct attack at his colour.

I refer you again to if we sung:

''Thierry Henry, his Dad loves onions, and his mum is a whore'' - is that racist? Cos its the same theme, we would be associating a person with a location. Are we being racist?

Shit, this is the thread I should have posted this in. (From Donna Cullen at THFC)

As you know, no offensive or racist chanting is tolerated in the stadium and, yes, the 'Adebayor song' is considered to be both offensive and racist (we have also received complaints from many, many supporters). As such, and as with any other offensive singing/chanting we will be looking to evict and ban any fan caught chanting this.

We shall use both observers placed in certain parts of the crowd and also be asking fans to use the TEXT number to report this and any other chants and the stewards are briefed accordingly. It is in all our interests to make matchday enjoyable and there are so many other non-offensive chants that are a tribute to our fans' sense of humour that everyone would much rather hear!

I should be grateful if you would convey this to fans through your forum and appreciate your help with this, many thanks, D

There doesn't have to be any direct mention of colour for it to be racist. As I recall, there was no direct mention of Cyrille Regis's colour in the song MkKid's just mentioned. Would you be happy for people to sing that?

If you would not, explain the difference.

The Cryil one is referring to him as being a Monkey quite blatantly. The adebayor one is suggesting that he cleans elephants, do only black people clean elephants?? Funny, cos I took my daughter to London Zoo and saw a white female cleaning an elephant!

Can you explain the difference between my version of an Henry song and the Adebayor one?

I thought it was more of a cultural slur, than race related to be honest.

If that's not acceptable, then the same fans can't proudly sing that Liverpool fans should "sign on", that Port Vale fans beat their wives, that Southend fans' houses exist on wheels, that Arsene Wenger has a penchant for young boys, that Brighton fans are all homosexual ...

The list goes on. But I've been trumped by a race card, so I've got a doggy's chance left I suppose.

Stoof once again we agree. The Keane Defoe debate really synched our minds eh??

Mate, I've said all of the above already in this thread. But yep, the race card has been played!

god knows, its racist and its not. it can easily be argued that its racist and it can easily be argued that its not. there is no defintive answer. except to say that the club view it as racist and offensive therefore that should be the bottom line. and its a dumb fucking song to be singing especially when we're not even playing against adebayor

Good. I'm glad you were able to pick that out. So you should be able to take it one step further and see that the implication of the Adebayor song is that Africans are simple, backward piccaninnies with watermelon smiles (copyright arsehole extraordinaire Boris Johnson) who spend their days in the sunshine doing simple, backward things like washing elephants for a living.

You saw a white female zoo-keeper washing an elephant at London Zoo? Well whoopyfuckingdoop and bully for you. As fatuous justifications go, that's about as fatuous as fatuous gets. Not to say fat-headed.

Eating onions is really race and place specific, isn't it? Unless they happen to a Vaishnava Hindu or something, just about everyone on the planet eats onions. In fact, just thinking about onions has put me in the mood for a toasted cheese and onion sarnie this lunchtime.

Oh no! That will turn me into a Frenchman!

So washing elephants is exclusive to Africa - you can be so arrogant for an old man sometimes SS57, as if you're a demi god of some sort on here.

So, gay boys are exclusive to Brighton? Pikeys are exclusive to Southend? Jobless are exclusive to Liverpool?

And suggesting that the song means that Africans are backwards is your take on it - I dont see it as that whatsoever. Do you believe then that all Scousers are jobless?

The amount of 'Emperor's New Clothes' type justification on here for a chant that clearly attempts to make derogatory remarks about an individual's racial origin is incredible. I'll give people that have sung it the benefit of the doubt that they didn't originally consider the racial connotations. However, now that the racist nature of the song has been pointed out in some very clear ways people are having to defend their previous behaviour - and are having to do it with some of the most perverse logic I've ever seen (see white elephant washers as a prime example).

What we're seeing is people defend the chant by essentially saying, "I have sung the Adebayor song and I am not racist. Therefore the chant can't be racist."

Sorry everyone. It just doesn't stack up.

What are you suggesting? are you suggesting that I am racist? are you a scouser? cos you spend your entire life on here so I would suggest you are jobless?

People that sing this are either racist or stupid enough not to realise the racial connotations behind it. So, racist or stupid. Take your pick.

All those claiming it is racist should from now on stop using the words 'yid or yiddo' as that is clearly a reference to Jews whether it's in good intention or not. Somebody somewhere (although probably not an elephant washer...) is bound to be offended by your 'yiddo' chants and thinks you're a racist for using it so please in the interests of not offending anybody (intentional or not) stick to using 'Spurs'.

Congratulations on so utterly missing the point. We call ourselves Yids as a badge of honour and as a way of showing solidarity with our Jewish support. We do not use it as a term of abuse.

As far as I'm concerned, the test here is the motivation behind what is being chanted. For the Adebayor song it is to demean someone based on their racial origin. Calling ourselves Yids actually promotes tolerance and acceptance.

I shouldn't think the offended Jewish person agrees with you. You must take their considerations into account so please stop using the offensive yid words.

Theres a good chap.
