I agree with the sentiments of the original post. No chance of winning the CL at present

No chance of finishing top 4 if we go hell for leather in this years CL

The club needs a few years of consistent CL qualification through the league to progress and keep improving its squad to the extent that we can compete in multiple competitions without it effecting league form

When the draw was made and we didn't get a glamour group with really top opposition I was disappointed because we might just qualify out of this group if we slog our guts out which will be to the detriment of our league position come next May

One seasons CL qualification in maybe 5 is no way to build a strong enough squad year on year without big Russian/Arab etc money

We've done brilliantly in recent years trying to compete on multiple fronts but let's be honest we are fighting well above our weight atm

We are very much on the brink of how Arsenal were some years ago. We aren't quite good enough to go the full stretch, but it's vital to be in the CL every year for the experience, the player pull, and the money.

We need that money and exposure now the stadium is well under way, even if we only make the groups.

Why does one have to be a priority over another? Don't you think the squad we have is capable of doing both? And as was said previously, if PL is the priority why only aim for top 4?

I really don't get the concept that the team should only consider one or the other "a priority". To dare is to do and all that.

Of course the squad we have is not able to fight equally for the league and CL, or EL for that matter. You only have to look at our recent history in relation to final league position, how many games the squad has been stretched over by way of how far we have progressed in comps

If we get knocked out reasonably early from all cup competitions (except league cup which finishes early doors) we can finish top 4. Otherwise, no chance at present

disagree with OP, I'm tired of hearing about what we can do in the future, too many variables to look to that as some sort of answer to our success, injuries, players leaving etc we need success now and that means challenging to the max in all comps, if Leicester can win the league we can win anything, before Leicester had the cheek to win the league we were always told CL qualification was the best we could hope for punching above our weight...

This Pochettino quote about yesterday fits in with this thread, I think:
“We fought a lot last season to be here and your feeling is ‘Why not do more?’”

While i agree, is it possible to win every game in a season?

Today proves not.

We have to look at our priorities.

after 4 games in the league and 1 in the CL it is way too early in the season to prioritize anything.

we have a squad of 22 individuals that won't to play for Spurs whether that be in the league or CL, and we have a manager that has to pick 11 to start and put 7 on the bench, and hopefully realize that this season he will need to rotate a little more.

finishing in the top 4 is very important for the club, but as the past has shown us we can compete without it.

also a question for you.

if you was to prioritize the League over the CL, how would you go about it? or how do you believe Poch should go about it?

do you by any chance remember some little midlands club last season?

or

the season we got 4th, but lost out. that Chelsea team even after AvB was sacked shouldn't of even got out the groups, but they managed to get to the final because there players fought for it.

on any given day, any team can beat anyone, and yes if we get out the group we are going to need a lot of grit and luck to be able to compete, but it's not impossible.

do i think we will? I honestly believe we will lose around the last 16, do i believe if we prioritized the league over CL we would have a better chance of 4th? No, i believe we will finish 3rd-6th this season, and not because we never strengthened our squad enough, we just cannot compete with certain clubs in the transfer market or wages.

I say while we are in it, try to win it, and to prioritize the league over the CL, that would mean that the rotation side of things would mean leaving players out, and those players will want out the season after and try and play for a team that tries to win everything

Clearly, continued qualification for the CL is paramount to sustaining growth as a club, but can you imagine the boss resting any first teamers to concentrate on the league or indeed what the reactions of those first teamers would be were they to miss a big CL tie?

The point is completely moot therefore.

Top clubs prioritise both competitions, all this priority nonsense is just that, nonsense. If we want to be a top club we need to start behaving like one.

Whats so confusing ?

All the OP was saying is top 4 over a successful CL run,(not winning it ) and no top4.

What wrong with that?

Like BC said....CL footy every year is what we want ....that will change everything, yes we would love to win it, but realistically lets get in on a regular basis first....lets be realistic and grow step by step.

No one here said we don't want to win the fucker..read what the OP actually said.

Can imagine that a lot of posts from here will end up on other teams forums in their let's all laugh at Tottenham threads.

Come on guys, 1 loss to a decent Monaco team does not eliminate us from the competition. There's still a lot of football to be played.

Argument is typical of SC and pretty much modern day football fans arguments, why does there need to be a black and white? Why do you need pick a side?

The answer is that you prioritise both and you make sure you pick strong teams in both comps, to focus on one is incredibly small time.

Agree with this, but finances have changed in the PL since those times when the Arse were going through that transition and now there's a more equitable playing field for us with TV and CL money, despite the fact we're paying for a new stadium. Hope we get a creative and nippy AM in the next window. Really crying out for one!

I believe the champions league is of "secondary" importance to this year. The league is by far the more important.

Champions league is still important but our league position is more important.

2 main reasons being

1) We cant win the champions league (yet). However it is great experience for our youngish squad.
2) We need to concentrate on getting top 4 in the league again with a lot of sides so much stronger this year. Then we can look at actually being competitive in the champions league next year.

Lastly this is my personal opinion so take how you want. We need to avoid the terrible comp that is the Europa League at all costs.

Give me top 4 in the league this year and a cups run and i would bite your hand off.

Is my opinion too spurs negative?

Edit: I have clarified my point.

The best players want to play in the Champion's League.

While I see where you are coming from; you need to make allowances for the politics and attraction surrounding the competition compared to the Europa.

The priority for me is to adjust our game to suit a bigger home pitch.
We have had one of the smallest pitches in the prem for years and as players have become fitter, it has shrunk further.
We need to start adjusting our game. It might only be 5m or so difference, but multiplying that by the runs made gives a significant difference.

Sorry CL, but you have come at a tricky time, and we are going to experiment. But thanks for all the cash anyway.

and they way the people who disagree with see it is this:

to prioritize you have to make sacrifices, and with football to sacrifice 1 comp, a comp we all want to see Spurs play in, it means putting all our eggs into the League basket (without any guarantees of those eggs hatching), and that would mean not putting our strongest XI out in the CL, so we can concentrate on the making sure they are fit and ready to go in the league at the weekend.

can just imagine it

Poch: (to Hugo, Walker, Toby, Jan, Danny, shall I go on?) not playing you when we play CSKA, i want you fit for Sunday v City a must win game to try and get a top 4 finish.

one of the XI: your having a laugh, I want to play in the CL game, that's what we all worked our fucking bollocks off for last season

Poch: but, but, but

one of the XI: no fucking buts, can i leave next summer please
