I believe the champions league is of "secondary" importance to this year. The league is by far the more important.

Champions league is still important but our league position is more important.

2 main reasons being

1) We cant win the champions league (yet). However it is great experience for our youngish squad.
2) We need to concentrate on getting top 4 in the league again with a lot of sides so much stronger this year. Then we can look at actually being competitive in the champions league next year.

Lastly this is my personal opinion so take how you want. We need to avoid the terrible comp that is the Europa League at all costs.

Give me top 4 in the league this year and a cups run and i would bite your hand off.

Is my opinion too spurs negative?

Edit: I have clarified my point.

We need to make an impression on the Champions League. Winning it is a dream but competing in it helps the club to grow. The club has outgrown the Europa League unless we were to reach the semis of that at the very least. It's all progress then.

I said in the op we will be better to compete in champions league next year.
What will make us better to compete in it next year?

My opinion, is that league should take priority - it's the bread and butter, I am under no illusions that, that is actually the case.

But we are in the CL - this should be a very close second priority, to progress out of the group stage and into the knock out stages.

Last thing we'd want is to drop down to the Europa League.

Experience. A young squad in their first champions league should always improve the next year.

But we have to make it next year first. That is why the league is a priority.

We made it! Why put off until next year what you can do this year? Don't write off a year of experience! Improve now, today, this month, this year!

But we're already in it?

And how do our young squad gain experience if we don't take the competition seriously when we are in it?

And how do we avoid the Europa League if we don't qualify from our group and drop into the competition anyway?

Personally I believe the league and champions league are equal priority, plus if we qualify don't we get another windfall of cash.

If we fail abysmally in Champions League, I think it could have a negative effect in our league campaign as it is a competition that the players really want to do well in.

My whole point is the league is more important this year.

If we make it out of our group, i will be extremely happy.

However we cant let it affect getting back in next year with more experience.

Look what happened last time we made the champions league and the resulting aftermath.

If we don't put the required importance on the CL we'll end up dropping back into the Europa League which is the nightmare scenario - not only to be back in that competition but can you imagine the ridicule from other clubs if we qualified for the CL and were so bad we still ultimately ended up in the EL? Awful.

I was glad to see Poch pick his strongest possible team last night.

I assume a lot of people didnt read the op about champions league being secondary importance.

That means important but not our most important.

It is still important. I am not saying throw our chance in the champions league away.

Probably best winning it first before we turn our nose up at it :D
