we can’t assume what he would be after. It is unlikely anyone is going to pay him his PSG salary, likewise the same applies to Bale. If he wants a move and to play then they’re going to have to be prepared to be more realistic with their demands. Albeit not of the same calibre, look at Piatek... he only wanted to move to a similar and/or better club yet he’s moving to a turgid German side.

By all accounts Cavani wants Atletico. If we were to get him we would have to offer him much better terms than they are to try to win him over. It's the kind of situation I see Levy steering well clear of.

Not sure age has anything to do with it. Can you see Levy going for Cavani with how much he'll set us back compared to those others? Wages, plus agent fees and bonuses will come out far more expensive. Just doesn't seem like a deal Levy would go for, regardless of what we think.

I've also got a sneaking suspicion Cavani could easily turn out to be Falcao mk2.

I could see us having a shot at Cavani if he wanted a short PL adventure - for then to move to the US or China (6-12 months from now). What would you do with him if he asked for 2.5 years? Would be rather pointless having to play an aging Cavani next to Kane just because he is Cavani.

Would the same apply for Jose?

Quite possibly. However, I'd say that we'd expect goals from Cavani but I think JW might be more of an all round contributor at a much reduced overall cost.

Cavani - A lister but 32
Jose - Z lister but 28

people complain Cavani is too old but sanction moves for Llorente (35), Giroud (33), Mertens (32), some even wanted Ibrahimovic before he went to Milan and what’s he, 38?

Paying Kane level wages for quality for 18-24 months is a dam sight less risky than paying a fee and/or still reasonably high wages for dross.

Cavani is on 325k pw and only wants to go to Atletico Madrid

I don't watch PSG much these days so I'm not sure what kind of player Cavani has become, but I have watched Sociedad some because of Ødegaard. I have never even thought about Jose watching Sociedad playing. So not sure how much of an overall impact he will give us.

Cavani at least used to be very much involved in the overall play. For years I think his biggest weakness was his finishing. He scored a lot, but he also missed a lot. A bit like an early Suarez. Excellent at getting to chances, but not top class at putting them away. Cavani was a bit like a high energy Kane with worse finishing.

Well. What do we do with Kane then? He will never be a strong physical target player - even if he is decent at that aspect of the game.

If we are going to develop a style of play outside of Kane (which is a good idea) I don't see why that has to be built around a big player. Very few teams these days play with any sort of old school target man.
It’s not necessarily about him being a big, physical, battering-ram style target man. But there are many elements to the game of a traditional centre-forward that a Jose Mourinho team relies on more than a Pochettino team, and at the moment we’re sorely missing that. We would strongly benefit from a striker who can receive the ball with his back to goal, bring those around him into play, and just generally link with those around him. That isn’t really Son, and it’s certainly not Lucas.

His movement is some of the best I’ve seen but his numbers would be sooo much higher if he could finish as well as Kane

Don't disagree. I am not arguing there would be no benefit having someone like Jose, Giroud whatever in the squad. But I also believe there are some downsides. When you choose to do something you are at the same time excluding something else. I don't mind going to McDonalds, but if that means I won't be hungry for that 3 star dinner that was originally planned for that evening I rather skip the burger.

Was just going on the ESPN piece re his old Uruguayan club retaining 30% rights.

Either way it's an unwelcome development because it adds a complication and other deals like moutinho have fallen over because of it so we'll see.
Isn't that just an alternative definition of "30% sell on clause"?

I like Cavani and fair play to him if he only wants to go to AM. I’m more concerned about the gulf in class between the strikers we’ve been linked with. Regardless of their attainability, going from Cavani and Bale to Jose is a colossal gap in quality. For me it’s like looking at players in the same league as Janssen and we know how that worked out. Even the selling clubs don’t hold the likes of Jose and Piatek in high regard which is very concerning. With us being desperate for a striker, why not try and pick up someone from the Championship eg Watkins at Brentford? A player whom Chelsea are now being linked with.

All the journalists that cover us (and have things correct recently) are saying we are unlikely to bring a striker in now. Got to say I'm very disappointed.
