Crystal Palace reportedly close to signing Max Meyer. Could well be a replacement for Zaha.

Very good signing for them - They also want Antonio, Kouyate, and Gonalons.

Palace also have to sell in order to buy. They could very well be spending the Zaha money, whether he ends up here though is another argument all together.

Independent today saying Utd are ready to wait after the PL deadline to sell Martial. They think they can shift him to PSG if Madrid get Neymar.

If so we really need to press on with Zaha IMO.

Should have done so before imo, especially with Poch being so keen on him. Martial was never going to happen.

Yep. This is where potentially we could come unstuck. We'll wait until deadline day hoping to get Martial when in reality Man U have no intention of selling him to us. I still expect the nightmare scenario will happen: we'll sell them Toby whilst Martial goes abroad after the UK window closes.

He’s a free transfer though and a completely different player.
They're not going to replace Zaha with anything like the same quality playiing the same role though so Hodgson is no doubt looking to build a team with best quality available to them in other roles that he believes will work best for the team, I wouldn't bet against him doing either.

I'd have liked to see us go after Meyer, ideal option to compete with/cover Eriksen as a creative outlet. Apparently wants huge wages, but considering there's no transfer fee surely we could balance that out.

Meyer has been massively overrated on here ... he pissed off Schalke by not negotiating a new contract and thought all the big guns would be after him - now he's signing for Palace

He did look a talent a few years ago... but stagnated since, think for Palace it's a good deal though

I had a feeling he might be our safety net signing but seems he has got impatient. I reckon Palace have agreed to a release clause.

He might come into that Palace side and be brilliant - however, once he started to believe his own hype he fell completely out of favour at Schalke.

Think of the difference between Bentaleb when he was trying to prove himself at Spurs vs Bentaleb the season after when he thought he was the dogs bollocks...similar story.

It depends on backups.

I'd risk Martial if we have a suitable back up option of good enough quality but if not much more sensible to bring in Zaha now.

Agreed. I can't think of many possible backup options tbh. O. Dembele was talked about but that's very unlikely to happen.

FWIW Palace are front runners for Max Meyer, he's on a free so not sure of the relevancy to the zaha deal but maybe in a wages sense it could have an affect. I always think it's worth analysing the targets parent clubs transfer dealings for any possible snippets.

What I'd say with this one is Meyer would take up the position vacated by Loftus-Cheek so likelihood that he isn't being used as a bargaining chip by chelsea and also I highly doubt Palace would afford the wages of both considering they take up similar positions. Meyer began dropping deeper to the 8 position in the recent season.

Odds on Zaha coming to us have been cut across the board. Best odds now 4/1, with most bookmakers going 5/2 or 2/1. Last night you could get 14/1, with most layers going 6/1 and 8/1.

Apart from Ladbrokes, odds on him joining Chelsea have lengthened to 6/1 and 8/1.

It probably doesn't mean much, and it is still odds on him staying at Palace, but obviously someone is taking a punt on him coming to us.

I can't really see any link to Zaha on this one. You rightly mentioned RLC but he'll also replace Cabaye.

If they bring in Ings, Kouyate/Gonalons and Antonio as well maybe we're in business.

I think Palace fans would begrudgingly accept the sale if they got Meyer and 3 of them in.

Yeah I don't think Meyer coming in suddenly means Zaha is a dead cert to leave but as you mentioned looking at their overall business could be interesting.

I think Chelsea are cooling off as it's looking likely that Hazard will stay, but interesting there is still some money going down on us.

Chelsea have quite a big squad as well I think, so they can't buy too much without selling first.

I see Palace are being linked with/ close to signing a fair few players only weeks after Hodgson said there wasn't a lot of money available.

Brining players in before the selling of a player happens perhaps?
