Four/Seven for me

Ardiles/Villa. That ‘78 World Cup had such an impact on 12yo me, the goals tbe ticker tape, Mario Kempes. A few days later the sun popped through the letter box. I went to fetch it for my dad and as always peaked at page 3 before going to the back page. What a pair!!!

Klinnsman//Dumitresu/Popescu. On the back of the USA’94 World Cup. Klinnsman was diving like one of those blow up waves arm things you see outside car show rooms. He particularly disgusted me diving for a penalty to beat plucky South Korea who were huge underdogs at the time. I LOATHED him.

Meanwhile Romania were outstanding, some fantastic football and magic goals. Orchestrated by Georghie Hagi who was probably the best player in that tournament.

I was driving on the M27 eastbound when the news came on, then the sport’s and they announced Klinnsman. I was raging. I soon changed my mind.

Gazza - an obvious talent with a streak of genius mixed with madness. How we persuaded him to come to us over Ferguson’s United still baffles me

Rebrov. - he was the strike partner for Shevchenko at Dynamo Kiev and for the Ukraine national side. Both prolific but we al knew that Rebrov was the brains of the operation. Didn’t we? Well, we were all wrong. Remembered as a CB radio enthusiast because he didn’t have any friends.
Were the ‘94 signings all announced on the same day? Have a vague memory of hearing it all on 5 live. They were the ones for me in terms of pure excitement.

Rebrov. I was desperate for Shevchenko, but thought at least Robrev was his strike partner at Kiev. I remeber checking ceefax every day during the negotiations. All I got in the end, was one really sweet outside of the foot curler at WHL.

Then, I was really happy to see Soldado join. Obviously being so recent, I don't need to go over the disappointment of that particular deal!

Basically, I've got terrible taste in strikers.

The return of Bale was the most special for me. The whole build up and anticipation...then even the pleasant surprise Reguilon on top...top of my list.

Rebrov for me, I was 13/14 in my formative championship manager years so I was buzzing when we signed him, as Dynamo Kiev used to ruin me on that game. Ran up a huge phone bill getting twice daily updates on clubcall and making my parents furious. Got his name on my shirt for my birthday, which got torn to shreds when I came off a dry toboggan in chamonix that same summer. An apt metaphor for his Spurs career really, although I still maintain he wasn’t as bad as people remember

Berbatov.
I remember being at his first home game and turning to my Dad to say he was mustard. I had seen him play a few times in the champs league and he scored an amazing 20yard volley after a sublime touch. I was gobsmacked when we signed him, based purely on that one moment I had see. Turned out I was right, he was amazing.

VDV too, couldnt believe we had signed a bonafide "dutch master" from Real Madrid.

In terms of knowing what we were getting its not even a competition... Klinsmann! Vdv turned out an excellent signing but initially it was 50/50 is he spent thing. Gazza was, boy is superb but is he experienced enough out of his hometown shell etc. He turned out to be incredible but could've gone the other non football wise. Biggest let down and I use that phrase for lack of better phrasing is a toss up between two excellent strikers.. REBROV AND SOLDADO! Both excellent before joining but sadly both failed and it wasn't due to lack of effort on either's part.

klinsmann the first time. My mum phoned me at work to say the news had mentioned a German striker that had signed for Spurs, when I found out it was Jurgen, I couldn’t believe it. I was working in Page Street in Mill Hill opposite where Spurs trained and was lucky enough to get his autograph after one of his first training sessions. I was buzzing for weeks. I remember queuing up for hours to get in to Vicarage Road to see his debut in a pre season friendly. That summer was my first lads holiday which was Tenerife and we sign dimutrescu when there which was also amazing after watching him at the WC

Gazza, Lineker and Klinsmann for me. I remember us signing Lineker and being really excited that he'd be linking up with Chris Waddle - and then Waddle moving to Marseille days later.
I remember the fanzine called the Spur taking the right piss out of it

In adult supporting years its been VDV. As he was simply sublime and probably my favourite player.

Otherwise.i have to go back through the decdes to being a kid, when I was excited by every mention on teletext / ceefax!
