Easier said than done....

Especially once the CL squads drop down which tends to muddy the water....

This season looks like
  • Bilbao
  • Shalke
  • Ajax
  • City or Roma
  • Anderlecht
  • Zenit or Monaco
  • Basel or LFC
  • Olympiacos
Most of whom are at the very least capable of making a draw against them exceptionally difficult (at worst battering us) will all drop down added to more than a few teams already in the EL who are more than capable of beating us and advancing to the finals in the EL is an exceptionally difficult competition to move forward in.....not an impossible task by any stretch of the imagination but certainly not the type of competition that we can assume concentrating our resources on will result in a run into the finals.

I think we should concentrate on just playing hard and winning each game we play. There is no concentrating on this or that.. Just go and try and win every game, not too complicated. As for winning the Europa, I would love it as much as next guy, but right now we are not good enough to do much at all.

Win the Europa League?

hahahahahaha... we are struggling to beat mid to lower table PL teams at home and you think we can beat seasoned European teams over 2 legs?

it is just too early to make any judgement about the EL The next game is not until February and a lot could happen before then.

I just want to see us win a trophy, one of the things that has pissed me off about football over the last few years is the fixation some fans have with the top four finish over everything else. To me the game is about glory not finishing among the losers/runners up ( top four), " My eyes have seen the glory of the cups at WHL" I am old enough to have seen nearly all of those victories and I want to see more not finishing among the losers ( top four).

We cant beat Partizan Belgrad without a sweat.

We cant beat anyone comfortable. Always with a pacey, quality attack we look hopeless at the back

I would love to win the EL ,and one of the reasons I had no time Redknapp was his attitude to the comp. If I had a choice it would be my first pick but as long as we win something I would be happy.

I think it's fair to expect that we're playing a lot better by the time the knockout stages start. Besides, we have been pretty good vs. the better sides this season, and unless City end up third, the teams we meet will be of the same standard as Southampton, Everton and Arsenal.

We have great players. Our top players are not fit but when they are I am confident we can progress in the cups.

Sorry, but we aren't remotely good enough to win this competition. We might hang on for a couple more rounds at most but as soon as we meet a capable team we're out. It's just a drain on our resources, really. Well worth going for all guns blazing if you have a realistic chance, but until things start improving drastically on the pitch, we don't. Our best chance of a cup is still the League Cup, and that doesn't look too good with the teams left in it.

In the cups anything is possible.

totally agree. arsenal went 9 years without winning a thing but make token efforts in cl. I think a trophy , no matter which one could really give us a kick start. We ve got a great chance for league cup and i think we should play strongest team to try and win it. Lets be honest we aint gonna get 4th spot this season if we cant beat wba, stoke and palace at home and even if we did qualify how far are we gonna get?. I wanna see spurs win a trophy again

On current form both look unlikely but if you asked me which one was the more likely of the two I would say winning the Europa League.

Why ?

One the basis of what I've seen of us this season and let's say we improve over the next couple of months I think we are more likely to scrape through two legged ties than string large sequences of wins together literally one after the other in the PL. There has been nothing I've seen this season that encourages me enough to think we can be that conststent for 12 -15 or so games in a row which is what we will need to to have a chance of grabbing a top 4 spot. Realistically we would need a return of say 35 - 40 points from 15 games to have a chance.

Even though there will be some really good teams dropping down into the last 32 of the EL with a bit of luck and some improvement we could pull this off if we raise our game in a series of spread out cup ties, Chelsea did it in 2012 by getting lucky and they were clearly inferior to many of the teams around them in the CL so why not us.

So on balance the EL looks the more doable of the two but we would need luck along the way and a few kind draws and a huge improvement. Based on our current form, realistically our best chance of getting into any European competition is winning the League cup, again we will have to improve, get lucky, and hope another team upsets an under strength Chelsea en route to the final.
