Probably because VDV was beloved for his passion for the club, not just his ability, and left after 2 very decent seasons for a pretty low fee.I have never had a problem with AVB selling VDV. I might be mistaken because I don't watch German football but what I read suggested he wasn't on top of his game when he returned to Germany. Seems we likely did sell him at the right time, possibly could have got one more season out of him.
I do find it strange that people complain about us not selling Eriksen earlier but not VDV.
Eriksen on the other hand was a consummate pro but never really won the hearts of the fans in the same way. Unlike VDV, he also clearly was desperate to leave and his performance level dropped massively towards the end, souring a lot of fans views on him.
Having said that, a lot of those same fans who complain about us not selling Eriksen earlier would've been the same ones slagging off Levy for his lack of ambition if we actually had sold him to Madrid for 70m, so you can't win.
