I have never had a problem with AVB selling VDV. I might be mistaken because I don't watch German football but what I read suggested he wasn't on top of his game when he returned to Germany. Seems we likely did sell him at the right time, possibly could have got one more season out of him.

I do find it strange that people complain about us not selling Eriksen earlier but not VDV.
Probably because VDV was beloved for his passion for the club, not just his ability, and left after 2 very decent seasons for a pretty low fee.

Eriksen on the other hand was a consummate pro but never really won the hearts of the fans in the same way. Unlike VDV, he also clearly was desperate to leave and his performance level dropped massively towards the end, souring a lot of fans views on him.

Having said that, a lot of those same fans who complain about us not selling Eriksen earlier would've been the same ones slagging off Levy for his lack of ambition if we actually had sold him to Madrid for 70m, so you can't win.

Yeah you're definitely right on the passion side. It's rare to get a player of VDV's ability with the passion and attitude as well.

But sadly there is a time to sell players. If AVB wasn't manager then maybe we could have got 1 more season out of him.

Yeah - him and AVB would've probably been a terrible fit tbh. I just think it's a shame we let go someone with so much talent and passion, even if he was a little bit past it. Especially now we have the knowledge that his replacements weren't any better.

I can’t believe I’m seeing anyone suggest Gylfi was even within ten leagues of VdV. One had imagination, flair, exceptional output, leadership and big game mentality. The other is a decent technical player with good output but has never become more than that.
