It has to go. It is ruining the spontaneity of the game and taking the joy out of it.
This!

Goal line tech, yes, but otherwise let’s go back to what it’s always been and that is the ref makes the final decision. In my mind they make no more mistakes than VAR officials do.

There may be an argument for each team having, say, two challenges and the ref being able to refer something he is not sure if to VAR but otherwise just let the game flow

To scrap VAR we also need to ban the forensic micro analysis that goes on in TV studios over every decision. Without that the vast majority of VAR decisions would have been accepted with a shrug of the shoulders.
I have no issue with var. It’s the application of var.

The application and level of detail being examined together with the time taken is making it unfit for purpose and ruining the enjoyment of the game on tv and more importantly for the supporters at the game.

If I could change it I would do the following:

All var reviews must be completed within 30 seconds.
The referees original decision is upheld if no significantly clear error is identified.
No lines for offside. If you cannot identify a clear offside with your eye within 30 seconds the goal stands.
All reviews to be played back in normal time. No slow motions or still pictures.
All reviews to be shown live on the tv screen with audio.
All players attempting to talk or interfere (10m exclusion area) with the referee whilst reviewing the on screen view of the action to be booked.
The delay to the match on Monday was a disgrace. All of us at the ground trying to get our mobiles out to find out what is going on shows that the paying supporter is being ignored.

Seems like there's nothing out of place here, procedurally. No conclusive evidence to definitively rule it out on any of the counts so don't rule it out.

Whole process worked perfectly well there. It just takes a long time because they're asked to check everything. The only way to avoid the length of time is to scrap it. I'm not sure I'm there yet.

I would like to hear the audio of the Curtis Jones red; the Cuti red - and the discussion that decided that what Endo did on Sunday was NOT a red

Just watched the process in the incident that led to Cuti's red card.

Again I think this process is perfectly fine and the conclusions drawn make sense. It explained to me just why Jackson was offside and it was unanimous in the var box that Cuti had committed a serious foul play despite all earlier acknowledging he'd got the ball. I liked that Oliver asked for a real time replay (not sure he got it btw) but I'm not unhappy with any of that except it's annoying Sterling dives and no sanction but that's not in their remit.

Again the question is - was all of this worth all the time and angst? That's a subjective matter.

Now I want to hear the audio from the Endo non decision

Penalty kick/no penalty kick

attacking team offence in the build-up to the penalty incident (handball, foul, offside etc.)

That's from the VAR protocol. Sterling committed an offense worthy of a caution and IDFK. In the armchair theory of the laws an IDFK to Spurs and a red to Romero is technically correct.

However considering I cannot once remember the ref overturning a PK and giving a yellow for diving ever in the PL it was never going to happen.

And just because I've been going through it I found this one interesting

I thought this was a dreadful decision at the time HOWEVER watching the process I can understand why they went for "no clear obvious error" - there is contact.

Now PGMOL have declared it WAS a clear and obvious error - but I think this is unfair to the VAR team. They are told not to re-referee the game so they didn't. What they SHOULD have been allowed to do is ask Taylor to watch the incident again and make sure he's happy there was enough contact to justify his penalty decision.

Var we're just following their guidelines. It's unfair of Webb to move those goalposts. There was "contact" just not nearly enough to justify the penalty.

For the avoidance of doubt this was never a penalty but I understand why the ref gave it and, having watch their process, why VAR didn't overturn.
The problem remains : it was NEVER A PEN.

Nah, its more likely going to eventually hopefully end up like rugby which is generally a very smooth and quick transaction.

I just think football has so many more major subjective decisions that will always cause problems. Every PK and red card decision is massive to the outcome of the match.

But you're not going to say the TMO ruined the game when they gave a try 15 minutes into a match.

I'd like to see a new rule where managers are automatically banned for a game if they criticise a referee. They'd all stop talking about them pretty quickly which would stop the interviewers asking questions about them.

Premier League clubs could vote to get rid of VAR couldn't they? It would be interesting to see what happened if someone tabled the motion. Even if it was voted down it would probably lead to big changes in the use of the system.

Just remember with the automated tech you will have players offside by pixels.

Also the early 2000s FIFA crowd is amazing.

Please tell me how they didn't spot the elbow early on? Word was VAR wasn't working!?!?! What on Earth is the point in this poor excuse for technology.

Offsides were correct but how Villa had 11 men is beyond me. This in addition to Cash being able to stay on, should have received a second yellow after that awful injury tackle.

Wanted to post in Gil's thread but thought it's more apt here.

The issue when the VAR was having issue was only the pitch side monitor not repaying the pictures if the ref wished to watch. Other than that, VAR was still assessing whatever needed to be assessed. Here is the clarification from football London.

Because it's a terrible website, I'll just paste what's from there:

Tottenham and Aston Villa saw some VAR issues occur in the opening moments of their Premier League clash on Sunday. As revealed by a number of broadcasters, there were some problems occurring with VAR and although those issues were quickly resolved, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has provided some clarity on what happened at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

"The VAR was working. The feed was going into Stockley Park, they could see everything the problem was it wasn't relaying to the monitor in the ground," he stated on Sky Sports News' Ref Watch. "So if there was an incident that VAR checked the VAR would have had to relay back to the referee what he had seen. The referee couldn't go to the monitor."

On the game still starting despite the problems, he added: "The referee is there to referee the game. The VAR is there as a back up. It only lasted 10 minutes until it was corrected but in that 10 minutes they were at the mercy of the VAR. Everybody knew in the ground [it wasn't working]. It was relayed to all the broadcasters and I could hear the VAR saying to the referee, 'this has been cleared'. So they were checking everything as it went on."

While it was only out of action for a small amount of time, it was a chaotic opening to the game with numerous Spurs fans disgruntled about some decisions not going their way. The first arrived following Dejan Kulusevski's shot which struck the post with Brennan Johnson firing an effort back into the danger area that was not dealt with by Emiliano Martinez.

As a result, Ezri Konsa appeared to handle the ball with Diego Carlos then fortunate to escape giving away a penalty and being sent off just seconds later. With Bryan Gil attempting to pick up the pieces, he appeared to be elbowed in the face by Carlos with Roy Keane making his feelings clear on the incident at half time.

On Sky Sports, he said: "Silly boy. He must look and think that he's obviously got no chance of getting the ball, but once you raise your elbow – a sort of swinging elbow – he’s very, very lucky." Despite the VAR issues, there was no prolonged review of either incident involving Konsa or Carlos which certainly suggests it was not deemed a serious incident by the team at Stockley Park.

It's disgusting VAR and now Dermot Gallagher dismissing the incident as not a serious incident so non-chalantly. Klopp, Pep and Arteta will be crucifying these people if the same happened to them. They don't sound apologetic for us at all for the incident as well for the technical glitch. Sickening officiating and the VAR. I'm not ever gonna be sympathetic for them anymore. Klopp or Arteta can curse them for all I care. They fucking deserve it.
