Alex Morgan is an incredible signing for us. In the women's game she is a superstar, and she ran England ragged in the Womens WC.

Morgan is the biggest footballer in the US, full stop. Pulisic pales in comparison in terms of name recognition.

I wish they’d play the same day as the men’s. I’d definitely get to the game a couple of hours early to watch it. Must be doable on some days.

Yea should be doable , I went to the women's game v arsenal at the stadium last season and the bottom 2 tiers were more or less full. Tickets were about a fiver I think but was a good atmosphere and lots of families with young kids. There is definitely a market for sales when it comes to the bigger games anyway. This signing will only help that if fans get let in before her loan is over.

Just for fun, here's me twice suggesting signing Alex Morgan in June 2019
(y) :)

Fair point. I only meant for games at NWHL and I'm not saying that would be every game but just a little something to boost attendance now and then

If you wanted to throw some money at it and maybe get one or two really big names in e.g. Marta, Kerr, Alex Morgan ??? they'd want to be playing at NWHL in front of decent crowds and that's a bit chicken and egg
Indeed if you read my 3 or 4 posts in this thread I suggested getting one of the WC star players in (one of the names was Alex Morgan with three ???s because it was a bit flippant - the equivalent of signing Ronaldo perhaps - a superstar at the end of her career)

Indeed as I also said - it's a bit chicken and egg. Typically in the men's game if you want to crash the party and sign big players (and assuming your bids are acceptable to the selling clubs) that's a question of wages and convincing the players that you are going places.

I don't know if there are FFP type rules in the women's game but in any case you can't magic revenue over 5 year contracts from 1k home crowds. It's also difficult to sell playing home games there. Hence my comments about getting the crowds in this season and selling NWHL as the location for at least a handful of bigger games

Good to hear above that we've signed at least one very decent player

I wonder if any of the ITKs or anyone with connections to the club knows how this came about. Who approached her reps, who drove it, etc.

Also wonder if this is part of a wider tie-in for parnership/sponsorship reasons.

Anyone have any info? @Trix maybe? Sorry and feel free to ignore if out of line.

The women team must be so excited. The only transfer I can think of equivalent for the men’s would be Klinsmann.

Maybe because we already signed 2 players from her team we built up some sort of positive relationship with them I'm guessing.

I went to the WSL Spurs vs Arsenal match last season, along with over 30k people supporting both clubs. The entertainment at ha;f time was great for the next generation but what got me thinking was how much revenue even 30k would generat. Not just the ticket prices, which were nominal, but the turnover in the snack bars, especially with the age profile hunting down the Krispy Kremes! I would think that Levy will want to ramp up the WSL club exposure this season, with maybe three or more WHL matches for the team. Shirt ales will soar, both on match day and also online from the US and around the world. Another master stroke by the Spurs Ladies management and their teams above them, in finding am marque player for this second WSL season.

This is a huge thing for fans in this country. Put it together with the Amazon prime series and Tottenham are really in the spotlight in the US

Brilliant move, on and off the field, would raise our profile much much much more in the USA.

Would really help raise alternative sources of revenue and part of Levy's cunning plan to eventually raise our revenue to top 2/3 in the UK and for us to then be able to compete financially sustainably for the long term

I'm actually buzzing off this signing more than I have any club signing for a while!
It's brilliant for the profile of the women's team and the club as a whole. Massive coup.

Watching the women so far this morning against Everton and I think not only is Morgan a huge signing for the profile but also an absolute tactical necessity.

We have some really tidy players in the midfield and backline and keep possession well but there’s zero pace or endeavor in the front three. Morgan will add that in abundance, at her peak she was probably the paciest player in women’s football. She’s off that a bit now being 31 and her game is more well rounded but she still terrifies defenders for pace.

I’ve been trying to think of the right player comparison of her since we made the signing and I think the most fitting is Liverpool-era Fernando Torres. Like Torres, She’s a real hard worker who makes excellent runs in between the CBs and cannot be caught for pace. But she can also pick up the ball and run at defenders while putting the fear of god in them. Absolutely what we’re crying out for in watching this Everton game.

I still just can't take the womens seriously. Opening womens super league weekend and there's a 9-0 and a 9-1.

I just don't see it as elite. In many other sports the women are elite. Tennis, athletics etc would all see the female elite smash any male non elite player, even a top semi pro.

A semi pro mens footy team would easily compete, if not beat a pro womens team. I just think the standard is really poor.

Don't mean to offend anyone. Just my opinion

It’s all relative. There only difference is there aren’t enough high quality teams to fill an entire league. Like a suped up La Liga, the quality from top to bottom is huge, less so in the men’s game. However big the gap is between men and women doesn’t matter, two evenly matched women’s teams can still provide entertainment.

It's not that the standard is poor, it's more that there are huge inequalities in the quality and money/investment between the top teams and the rest. City, Arsenal and Chelsea are among the top teams in the world. Some of the other clubs have only been fully professional for a few years.
