Mainly hitting the range at the minute need to get back out. Played Saunton before Christmas which was a great course but challenging for me, I haven’t played much at all other than a few work comps

Planning to get back out regularly once the weather gets a bit nicer.

I am pretty bad though but its one of those sports that is so enjoyable, nothing better than being out on the course early in the morning, peace and quiet, finding out which bunker you are in.

Saunton is on my must play list for 2023. I adore Links golf. I get Trevose free, so I go up there whenever I can get a free tee time (couple times a year); love the place.
I'm based in Plymouth so not a lot of links courses near me. We've got St Mellion close by but it's never really floated my boat tbh

Patiently awaiting delivery of my first set of clubs, went up the range with my boy and he really enjoyed it so spent Saturday night buying us clubs.

Any tips for beginners?
Any extra tips for teaching a 10 year old?

Keep hitting the range. Get talking to a local pro and invest in some lessons for beginners too for the both of you.

Pitch and putt/par 3 is an ideal place to start for a 10 year old initially too if there is one close to you. Enabling you to keep a tidy short game before you get on the full course.

Don't try and kill the ball on the range either. Smooth and steady.

Lessons. Well worth the money. It really helps when first starting. Grip, alignment etc.

Yeah as others have said, lessons. I did the bronze classes at my local club, need to go back for some one to one in the summer, it gave me the basics to be able to go out on the course and play a round and not feel stupid or like I don't belong. Certainly wouldn't have played any work comps without the lessons! Especially teeing off as the first team whilst the other 3 all stand and watch.....

Also a par 3 course is perfect for getting practice in. I don't tend to score myself much either, unless I am really in the mood, because then you can play each hole and enjoy it, whereas if you go there with a score in mind and then you mess up the first hole or two then it really does ruin the rest of your game.

Speaking from experience, as someone who never bothered with lessons, and thought that he could solve everything with new shiny clubs and YouTube...

Get some lessons ;)

My local range has a really good teaching pro and they do beginners courses

Really important to get a good foundation, grip/setup etc before you start thinking you’re the new Tiger

I’ve got an understand of hitting it which gives me a start, I’ll certainly look into lessons for me and the boy. Not sure there are any par3 courses by me so I’ve got a 9 hole booked for Sunday with a mate.

Can’t wait for the summer to get out properly (ability dependant)

It's easily done mate.

Seriously though (and it sounds like you already are) just enjoy it. The moments you'll have together on the course will be priceless, especially as you are starting the journey together.
On the rare occasions that I can prise my boy off his Xbox, and when he's not being a stroppy shit cos it's TOO HARD, we have a great time out there. Enjoy :)

We definitely had some tantrums because he wasn’t driving it like I was, just tried to explain golf is both brilliant and shit at the same time. As long as he leaves slightly better than when he got there it’s been a success.

Went went to the chipping green on the way back to the car and his last shot was a beauty so he left with a smile.

Mine was shocking so I bought new clubs.

If you’re both Spurs supporters he should be well aware of the concept of it being brilliant and shit at the same time!!

Played Sunningdale Old yesterday

If I had all the money in the world there is no other course I’d want to join (not that I’d get in!!)

It was absolutely stunning even after all the rain and hail - if there is a better course architecturally, visually or in better condition, on this planet, I’ll eat my Spurs hat

Yeah lovely little place over there!

I cannot wait to start playing again, for me, certainly since I had kids, I had to pick either carry on playing football or golf, I chose football.

move played about 4 rounds in the last 8/9 years, so whilst I was a reasonable 16 handicapper, I’m a flat out 28 these days 😂

mince this season is finished, I’ll get new clubs, get them fitted them start getting back out a couple of times a week

Anyway, one thing I have been searching for, for a while is a new set of clubs, I’ve been thinking about the taylormade m4 ones - any recommendations, I don’t really want to spend more than 500 quid on a set of irons, ideally less 😂

Don’t think you can go wrong with Taylormade gear these days. They do some good stuff

I’m looking to get a fitting in June. I’m still playing with my Pings from the mid 90’s

I need to update my old Callaway X20's that i bought second hand about 15 years ago! Looking at something like the Ping G410s but will probably not until later this year.

@Shanks I'm always around if you fancy getting to Pine Ridge to hit a bucket of balls on the range (y)

Ledge mate, yeah that’s my local range - once I sort clubs, let’s get going (and then have a round)!

I’m using my little brothers clubs, they are decent but older callaway ones, just too small (and no pitching wedge as he launched it into a lake) 😂
