I think Barkley is wanted for strength in depth. If we as a club want to cement our place in the top 4 we need to be able to compete in all 4 competitions and whilst we have a number of promising youngsters coming through they are not ready yet. Our current squad, and excluding those on loan, numbers 24 and include CCV, Winks, Onomah and Dele, all of whom have 1 or 2 more seasons as under 21's. So we technically have 4 spaces available in our squad plus any spaces made available by those transferring out (IIRC under 21's can play without being listed in the squad, please correct me if I'm wrong.).

I accept that Poch has said he prefers a small squad, but he may have changed his view since he last said that!

Can't see why we would be interested in Barkley, unless maybe see with his physical attributes he could be moulded (with a lot of Poch coaching) into a long term Dembele replacement? Cue the wtf ratings but Barkley does have that dembele-esque ability to glide past players and although not as physically dominant he's not an easy player to knock off the ball

If we stay with the 3-4-2-1 then he's clearly behind Dele and Eriksen, and I feel Son is the superior player by quite a distance at this juncture as well as being a change of pace to the other 2 and we are never going to spend the 40+ million for a rotation player

See where you're going with the Barkley thing. Think he could well be a dm by 27. Won't be forty mill though, will he?

Can see something being done with Sissoko going the other way, separate deals though...

Barkley really hasn't got the positional sense to play dm, he'd be a liability in a cm 2, can anyone seriously see him tracking runners?

Barkley will get very expensive IMO. If we are signing him for a bits and pieces squad role, he will probably be offered the same squad status at a club who pays more. I think we'll be priced out of this one, and it's IMHO probably for the better.

Good job that he won't cost £40m then, Everton don't hold the cards in this situation given he could leave for nothing next season.

Obviously none of us have an insight into Poch's thinking, but your thoughts are, I feel, the most logical regarding Barkley.

Dembele is getting on a bit, in Footballing terms, and is prone to injuries that keep him sidelined for extensive periods. Though I'm not really sold on Barkley, I can see where the similarities with Dembele are. It is quite feasible that with a bit of coaching, Poch could get him to play that role alongside a DM, allowing him to carry the ball from deep.
It has been a bone of contention for many on here that, whilst Dembele goes past players at will, his end ball lacks the kind of penetration that would elevate him to elite levels. Barkley does have that end ball, though it's not anywhere near as good as it could be, but just maybe he could find it in our setup.

It's a gamble, but I can see the possibilities.

I wonder how the Everton faithful would react to Koeman if Poch did take Barkley to the next level.

If we're gonna get Barkley to replace dembele why not replace wimmer with Andy Carroll? After all he's big, strong and good in the air

This gets right up my hooter; as soon as the Transfer Rumours page opens, the dating ad with the middle aged barmaid from the late 1980s appears. I blame the Russians

It was just a theory as to why we clearly hold an interest in a player who plays a position we are stacked in

At Barkley's age, Mousa was a striker

Hey let's debate Barkley over Moussa. That will be fun and only lead to around 6 bans.

If Barkley signs I'll be excited to see how he improves under Poch. Along with Sessegnon, things are looking set for a bright future at our new stadium.
