In terms of expectations, I think the idea that Spurs "wanted" 4-5 more in post-Romero is where it all went wrong.
The interpretation of that came across as Spurs "will get" 4 more in (5 if they sold Kane) - and one of the ins would definitely be a forward, if not a striker.
The reality, of course, is that Spurs did want 4-5 more in, but those deals proved harder to do than they imagined. But, when the expectations are set at players coming in, and that does not materialize, it naturally leads to frustration.
Exactly this, plus the extra money from a unnamed source, the waiting because the end of the window is when the best deals are done, no need to sell to buy, covid discounts etc set expectations too high. I was admittedly caught up in all of this, which is why I feel this window was a disappointment.
What can you do.
