We almost had a big problem there. I think I've managed to fix it but it got quite worrying.

A few quick things:

I've turned search off. I know it's a pain but it helps the server a lot.

Unregistered people won't be able to see the ITK forum any more. They can of course register to get access.

I might be turning the forum on/off during the evening so don't panic if you get a message saying we're turned off for 5 minutes. If you get a db error then you can worry a bit :p

Oh and please go easy on the page refreshing. I know it's hard to resist but if you don't want to site to die again then don't refresh constantly.

Seriously dude, outsource the heavy load stuff to Google, save yourself some money and help stave off the grey hairs for a few years.

Google?

We've considered the amazon cloud stuff but when we get stupidly busy I worry things would work but cost a fortune.

I thought it meant we'd landed a blockbuster signing and there was too much traffic. Im a little disappointed.

Yep.

You've got the SCITK blog, and the ITK is by far the biggest load on the server I'm guessing, so start using it for the ITK and the ITK discussion stuff.

Give the moderators writing permissions so that they can add the ITK in the individual posts and open the comments for those with Google Accounts/OpenID to move the ITK discussion over there.

Design the template so that it mirrors the forum, stick the DNS in so that it's branded under http://itk.spurscommunity.co.uk, whack the adverts/affiliates on there so it helps with the costs of this server.

Maximum exposure, maximum resilience and nowhere near as many headaches for you and the rest of the gang, and that's without even getting into the drive-by traffic.

That way when other forums go down, SC stays rock solid for SC users, your costs go down because you're not paying a fortune for the SCITK resiliency needed, because they'll all pile onto the blog, hosted on Google's servers.

Failing that, if you're worried about Amazon costs, look into someone like VPS.net for the burst power needed, or some external kind of content distribution/caching system.

Some interesting suggestions but that's where it falls down I reckon. There's no link between user accounts on here and on there for posting/commenting.

Did COYS go down first?

I assumed we went down because of that Guardian prat.

Guess that's about the size of it.

I think COYS will be in "lite mode" on Monday (no searches, PMs, etc).

May be an idea here as well.

Oh, and thanks Rob

let's just hope for no more Guardian exclusives such as 'Spurs may or may not stay in Tottenham' or 'Ryan Giggs to retire in the next 15 years'.
