Need Winks in there if Ndombele isn’t fit. Chelsea’s CM is there strongest part if we don’t have someone who can get on the ball and play forwards Kante Kovacic Jorginho are levels above Wolves and will have an absolute field day.

*Mourinho will go*
Gazza
Aurier Sanchez Toby Jan
Winks Dier
Sissoko dele Son
Kane

I think Jenas did an excellent job in identifying the root cause of this problem in MOTD.

Dier and Sissoko are not midfielders that play the ball forward instead they either pass sideways or backwards most of the time. The back passes tend to end up with the defenders who are now tasked with the job of the CMs, i.e. try to find a way to move the ball further forward. In this particular case, the easiest pass for them to make would be primarily to our wing backs (except for Toby who has the ability to make diagonal passes directly to our forwards). The additional time the defenders take pondering to find an outlet leads to undue pressure, due to opposition players closing them down. And as a result they end up making mistakes and losing the ball not unlike Sanchez yesterday.

So while Dier can be defensively decent, he's simply terrible with his usage of the ball. It is his responsibility as a midfielder to link play with the frontline.

This is more the reason why we cannot keep pairing Dier and Sissoko as our 2 holding midfielders. I understand the reason they started against Wolves was because they are a physical side, but the longer we stick with this combination, it will inevitably start costing us.
Our only midfielder who moves the ball forward is not fit. The other option in midfeild we have doesnt pass forward either, has been absolute garbage for months now and loves giving the ball away. We dont have options. Mourinho wont play GLC so we’re stuck with Dier and Sissoko until Ndombele is match fit.

I'm not really sure what would be our best bet in this match. Do we stick or twist?

Chelsea will be a bit like Wolves - silky on the ball with possession based build-up play but lacking a cutting edge.

Do we stick with Dier/Sissoko, sacrifice the ball and rely on our defensive solidity to hold them at bay before punishing them on the break?

Or do we bring in Winks, put Sissoko wide right and push Dele higher up? This would give us more possession and control but we'd lose the pace of Lucas and a bit of defensive solidity through the middle.

Hopefully Chelsea are so out of form that we smash them either way.

I think we will have Winks partner with Dier behind Lucas, Dele and Son with Kane up top. Dele is already pushing higher up. I think JM likes having the pace on the wings and would prefer Sissoko coming in as a sub on the right.

Winks remains our one player at pivot who has quick feet, can turn quickly and pass accurately. Dier and Sissoko are not this player. I'd play Winks and Dier with Kane Son Dele and Moura the other four. Loads of games coming up Sissoko and Lo Celso will get a look in and hopefully even NDombele will climb off Darrens treatment table and play as well:cautious:

And as we saw the two times Winks and Dier have partnered each other in this system we'll get destroyed in CM and they will exploit the space behind Aurier. I'm hoping Jose decides (now he has a full week) to play an extra CM at the expense of one of the forwards, or play a more conservative RB in Foyth. Lo Celso in for Moura, playing slightly deeper, with Moura and Sessegnon to come on the flanks after 70 minutes against tired legs would be ideal.

Really doesn’t matter. This is their big game. A lot for them are Chelsea through and through not to mention Lampard will drill the importance of the game into them.

He’ll be desperate to get one over on Jose too.

Cue Dr. Tottenham to the rescue...

I think if they have rudiger back they are a different beast. They could well beat us. But if it’s Christiansen, tomori or zouma back there I fancy our chances with a front three of Son, Kane and lucas. Dele will be the difference in this game again though I suspect.

I hope we turn up for this visit of an old Jose team unlike when we played UTD.

Yeah I've got a bad feeling about this one. Everyone in the press thought we'd smash Utd and of course they massively upped their game, despite them previously being in terrible form. At least we won't take Chelsea lightly this time, but form won't matter a damn in such a big game.

Our major problem all season was Poch's reality that when he rotated it was generally from a position of weakness rather than strength. NDombele, Sessegnon and Lo Celso were injured from the start and none of the three has any proven match fitness/stamina. Of course we'd like them in but it will be a slow integration under Mourinho who is not here on an era building mission. Both Dier and Moura have somehow got some match time and will be hard to shift them, apart from maybe at the busiest xmas period. Medium term I see Foyth being our right back but with Aurier playing almost to script I can't see that change v Chelsea. The third midfielder role for me should be Dele in ten but Mourinho is relying on him to get past Kane, so the donkeywork left and right will actually fall to Son and Moura with Sissoko coming on right late on

For all the previously mentioned conversations about Winks moving the ball quickly and Dier providing the positional rigour. Every other position picks itself. I'd just spend the game humping it over their midfield (or drilling the ball through them low) and trying to get as many 1 v 1s against the Chelsea defence.
