I trust the events of the past two Monday nights have finally put to bed the notion - advanced by a number of people on this thread - that we don't need to buy an understudy for Alderweireld because CCV will suffice. Utter hogwash.

Alderweireld has been our player of the season. BUT he has been overused - every minute of every league game up till the closing minutes last night, wasn't it? Consequently it is absolutely no surprise that we've been caught from a corner in each of the last two matches (Dier last week, Toby last night): four points squandered.

The man may not be utterly knackered but he cannot be at full sharpness (unlike Vertonghen after his enforced layoff). And given that Pochettino tends to take it slowly and carefully with youngsters, a la Onomah (Alli is an exception, being freakish), CCV was never going to be blooded.

We need at least three new signings for next season. Another centre-back who doesn't have to cost the earth (think Wimmer); a central midfielder who'll both complement and step in for Dembele, who most certainly will not be featuring in 38 league games and however many CL games we have; and another striker, given that we've been blessed to have Kane fit for the whole season.

Someone said here that with another striker we would have won the league. Maybe, maybe not, but I'm convinced that if we'd managed to buy Martial we'd have gone very close.

On the plus side, 13 draws so far. Convert seven of them into wins next season and we'll be bang there.

Have to agree that 13 draws has done for us its way too many which i have been saying for a weeks, its the main reason why we have not been able to win the league instead of leicester.
Another factor for me is not adding another striker last summer when we all knew we needed more goal threat especially as we draw 4 out of the first 5 games i think, and then to compound it we go after the same player in january only to get the same result.
We have been very lucky that kane has stayed injury free or we would not even had made top four let alone title push, in a season where we have played some fabulous stuff and impressed i cant help thinking that we missed a golden chance to have swapped places with leicester today because in part this has had an effect on not turning draws into wins.
Just three more wins would now have us top and in the driving seat but alas we didnt get the wins and we were never top, but all in all we have done very well and secured champions league football.

Today was another example of the importance of having players as good as the first eleven on the bench for when you need to change things up.

Chelsea needed something and could bring a players like Hazard on to change the game, while we had to count on Mason and Chadli. Hopefully Poch see the same and bring in a couple players that carry proper attacking threat against packed defenses.
The very same that utterly destroyed them when they were good.

Why are people so keen for us to shift Chadli and Son? They're good squad players who don't look as if they'll play up if they're not getting into the team.

Son has had more of an impact than Lamela did in his first season and will be all the better for it next.

We should be adding to this squad during the summer and making ourselves stronger, both in quality and numbers.

To improve we need to give ourselves genuine options by adding the right players.

That may mean we have a better option than the two mentioned, if we need to change a game from the bench. Or in an ideal world one or two of our current strongest 11 find themselves no longer the best in their role, thus making us better and stronger in depth.

Easier said than done, but 'one in' shouldn't mean 'one out'.

if we sign a forward/wing forward, Chadli might want to move, as he will be further down the squad. he has worked well as a sub this season, but struggled when started. we need someone that can do both, come off the bench, and start and be positive. Don't get me wrong I like the guy, but wouldn't want him or career to suffer because we buy a WF, cause it's the left side and Kane we need cover for.

Very well having an experienced player, but that have to be good enough too. And that means having the legs and stamina to fit into our team. Carrick wouldn't last 60 mins with us

Leicester got 11 draws so far. We've turned those ideal loses into draws. We just need to go one step more next season

The issue with Chadli is not that he hasn't played well but rather that he doesn't suit the pressing game. He has a good goal and assist return but we suffer as a collective unit when he starts matches.

If he's content to play a super sub role I could see him sticking around, but you have to think that Levy and Co. are giving a hard look at the potential profit his sale would bring.

But they have won more which has won them the league and they have been better under pressure when most of us expected them to crack.
The last two games for us have shown that we have struggled slightly with expectation by drawing both after being in front in both games.
Not sure we can go one better next season as i fancy a pep inspired city to be a different animal, while Utd if mourinhio goes there will be better and chelsea plus Liverpool with decent money plus klopp will be back.
I never thought i would see us be in a title race in my lifetime but this year Im pleased to say i have, as to us doing it again well i might have to wait another 48 years lol.

Yeah he's been superb this season. He's exactly the type of player we lack in the final third.

in what way? three goals from open play and six assists in 32 games. he works incredibly hard off the ball and he has good approach play but he's not a particularly great threat in the final third.

Similar to Modric was for us. He's the silent instigator.

He poses a constant threat and last night in the second half him and hazard looked really dangerous.

He's different to anyone we have as can beat players and needs proper marking.

Sorry, but Eriksen is a class ahead of Willian for me. Maybe defensive duties can be sharpened, but in an attacking perspective I'd rather have Eriksen all day.
