How many times have we heard Poch say we wont add anyone who wont improve our squad ?

We wont be buying back up players or depth players, he has made that pretty clear. I would think that means we will buy players that we can rotate through our squad for PL and UCL games and no doubt the younger players will get a run in the cups games.

What are you basing this on? Belgium's admittedly poor 2014 World Cup matches? By all accounts, he was pretty good for Zenit in CL this season. He's actually a very good passer of the ball, which is why he is ALWAYS the first midfielder on the team sheet for Belgium. If he wasn't any good, there's no way he'd be such a fixture for them, as they have lots of talent in their ranks.
Bromance with the NT coach could have something to do with it.

Witsel's best attributes are his technique and defensive skills. He's a good interceptor and rarely loses possession. But he dwells on the ball, taking too much time and often passing it sideways. He's an excellent AVB midfielder, which he shows at Zenith, but I very much doubt he'd fit in Poch's system.

Unrelated point since we are talking Belgian football - I went to Antwerp with some pals last weekend and caught the Royal Antwerp game (they won 2-0 and are 2 games from promotion to the top league for the first time in 12 years). Got to say it was a rocking atmosphere and the quality of football considering the level was excellent, no wonder they are turning out some players as a nation if that was anything to go by.

I have tried to find the article from last season which detailed Pochs plans for the squad. His idea is to bulk the squad up with our own youth players as there is no transfer fee involved & they command low wages. By doing this it will allow Spurs to have more money available to get the few important signings he wants.

This is why I don't think we will be signing too many squad fillers, he prefers to buy starters and mould the fillers which is sensible as long as youth players have right mentality & certain level of ability.

Apologies I cant find the article hopefully someone else will remember it and post it.

As a Belgian, I hope a Witsel transfer to us will never happen. Only reason he is ahead of Mous is he a firm favourite of NT coach Wilmots. His starting place is under scrutiny in the media and rightly so: he's slows down the play and rarely passes direct, instead passing the ball sideways most of the time. That really is all he does. Oh and I forget another thing he does: passing sideways.

this is exactly what I've seen when watching him play. he reminds me so much of capoue with that ambling around laid back style, he just doesn't play at a high enough intensity to work in a poch team.

I remember this article. Its a very salient point that should be noted. Son is an example of this kind of purchase.

RE Witsel, I remember being very impressed by him at Benfica?. He had a bit more creative license and freedom there to display more of his skills. Part of me wonders if AVB's type of football has him throttling his more creative side to play a very disciplined role. AVB seemed to play a very rigid 4-2-3-1 where the players would have very defined roles.

I'll admit that I would be very pleased with Witsel as a purchase but I would more see him as an upgrade in the Nabil/ Mason area as opposed to a Dier rotation. I guess the upside is that he is adaptable though and could play in either role to a very decent level. Big fan of Nabil though and don't want to see him further lost in the shuffle.

Dendoncker as DM
Batshuayi as CF

Malli if deemed necessary, although I'd be happy enough to place faith in Pritchard, Njie, and Son. Edwards is obviously a little further back on the horizon, but may benefit not having others in his way.

Use Walker-Peters as FB cover, Carter-Vickers as CB cover, Ball as CB/DM cover (I watched the Rangers v Celtic game, impressed by Ball in the Dier role), Onomah/Winks as CM cover, Harrisom as CF cover.

Sell Yedlin, Fazio, Carroll and Chadli to make space.

Back up players are squad players, so that doesn't rule us out signing those players.

You can't tell the difference in positioning between Dier this season, and both Mason and Bentaleb last season, in heat maps. It's a myth that Dier plays deeper than last season's double pivot pairing.
Heat maps only show when a player touches the ball and it's Dier's positioning off the ball that is the biggest difference between him, Bentaleb and Mason.

You could have said the same about Dembele pre Poch. I believe with some of Poch coaching even Walcott could be moulded into a half decent winger!

I reckon he could turn Witsel into another Dembele but I think we're pretty much nailed on for Wanyama.

As I've repeated endlessly, I would guess that we will buy players from two categories. Players who still have several seasons ahead of them and who *could* be a part of the starting 11 but are willing to fight their way into the team, and young players who will fall in that same category 1-2 seasons down the line.

He's the only player I can think of who we'd need who would give us that option.

realistically yes.

unrealistically we missed the boat on a few.

griezman, PEA. if only somehow we could clone a fit sturridge, would have been perfect

I tell you who I wouldn't mind us going in for - Oscar.

Terribly misused at Chelsea and an ideal Pochettino attacker, as he doesn't mind closing down and putting his foot in.

Never going to happen, but I reckon if he leaves Chelsea and right manager picks him up he could have a real re-emergence.

I'd be more than happy with that. Would love us to go for a 'box of tricks' player like Boufal or O.Dembele. I know the last one we had was probably Taarabt but I'd love to see what either of them could do in a setup like ours.
