So Muntari tells fans to stop racially abusing him.

Approaches the ref asking for the game to be stopped because of the abuse, for which he is booked for dissent.

Walks off in protest, for which he is booked and sent off and now has a 1 match ban for his troubles.

Way to go Fifpro!

I get he has been banned for his sending off, following 2 yellow cards, but I wonder why the ref is booking him in the first place?

My guess is that leaving the field of play without the refs permission is the reason for the second yellow.

Still seems to be a huge problem with racism in Italian football. Kind of thing you expect from Eastern Europe.

I understand the technicalities as to why he was booked and banned, just doesn't really seem like the best approach does it.

UEFA/FIFA couldn't give two hoots about racism imo.
Kevin Prince Boating was quite recently the victim of racist abuse in Italy, and he featured in the 'Say No to racism' advert where they flick through loads of footballers who all say it in their native languages... to my knowledge he was the only footballer in that advert that had ever suffered racist abuse as a player, yet when he moved clubs he was removed from the advert because his current team aren't in the CL...they are merely paying lip service to the issue.

Completely the wrong approach I agree. Seems that Italy still has a major racism problem within football and society.

I read last night that the reason the ref didn't intervene is because it was "only" 10 people in the crowd who were responsible.
Apparently, Italian FA say it needs to be a higher percentage before referee can act on it.
It's ridiculous, but it seems Italian FA don't really give a shit...

Rose was sent off for England U21 after being racially abused wasn't he?
Yeah that was in Serbia in a really nasty game where both their fans and players got in on the act.

The Tottenham midfielder, on loan at Sunderland, was dismissed at the end for kicking the ball into the stands, his second bookable offence, and made gestures with his hands under in his armpits in a response to the disgraceful abuse as he left the field.

Not surprised at this level of racism still present. I am surprised he's still playing so far into his 50's.

Should also be noted that its still happening in the UK as well, some moron was pictured making monkey gestures at Scott Sinclair in Scotland when he scored against Rangers last weekend.

If I remember rightly, the FA brought in a ban on all club and national teams under its control playing any Serbian teams in friendlies as a result of the trouble at that game. For all I know, the ban still exists, so English teams can only play Serbian ones in FIFA or UEFA competitions.

I cannot fathom why he has been sent off, it's ridiculous and the Italian FA should in my view overturn the ban.
That said, I am not sure about stopping a match in this instance. It should be reported and the club should be fined, cumulatively for repeat offences until it's behind closed doors, or one set of fans not allowed.

Obviously you would hope the purputrators get life time bans etc... but stopping a match is a big deal. It has the possibility to change the entire outcome and could be abused in itself as a means to get a match halted.

So in short, Muntari should not have been carded (that's daft) and the officials should have reported it to the stewards etc... and the issue dealt with whilst the match was ongoing (especially as it was "apparently" only 10 people). The bigger issue is probably the lack of real interest in the Italian FA/clubs to want to stamp this out.

Ex-Tottenham striker Garth Crooks says "every self-respecting black player" in the Italian league should strike this weekend unless Sulley Muntari's one-match suspension is withdrawn.

Change that to "every self-respecting player". If you're not openly against it you condone it.

Muntari's team mates should have supported him at the time. Players of all nationalities need to be sending the message that it won't be tolerated.
