Arry to Tempt Moyes in Audacious £15m Swap Shop

Why is it that Spurs seem hellbent on chasing Everton’s South African winger Steven Pienaar?

Speculation surrounding the World Cup star has been rife as his contract crawls ever closer to expiry in the summer with Tottenham emerging as the frontrunners for his signature.

Spurs have been linked to the star for some time and it would seem Harry is ready to offer his out-of-favour midfielder Niko Kranjcar in a swap deal worth roughly £15million.

The News of the World are reporting that Redknapp will offer his Croatian talisman plus £1million for Pienaar’s services. This could be an intriguing prospect for Toffees’ boss David Moyes, who has struggled to reach an agreement with Pienaar over an extension on his contract.

Moyes certainly needs a replacement for Pienaar if the winger decides to leave in January and Kranjcar would fit the bill. The Croatian International has years of Premier League experience and would be a snip considering that Everton would be resigned to losing Pienaar for free in the summer.

However, it is a head scratcher from Harry’s point of view. Spurs are exceptionally comfortable on the wings at the moment with the exceptional form of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon making it hard to see where Pienaar could fit in. Furthermore, Everton’s desperation to keep the winger will have increased the player’s wage demands and could stall any deal when agreeing terms.

Pienaar is yet to agree another deal at Goodison and will be hot property for a host of clubs come January. With the contract expiry looming, any offer in excess of £8million should be enough to secure the wingers services.

Stolen from a blog the other day:

Kranjcar is 26 - Pienaar is 28

Kranjcar in England has 15 goals in 110 (1 every 7.3) - Pienaar in England has 9 goals in 97 (1 every 10.8)

Kranjcar has 15 international goals in 61 (1 every 4.1) - Pienaar has 2 international goals in 55 (1 every 22.5)

Kranjcar is beautiful - Pienaar is a munter

Kranjcar is currently at Spurs on about 40K - Pienaar is a new signing probably requiring a settling in period, and wanting 60K+ a week

Absolute no brainer

I like Pienaar. Just don't think he'd get many games, so not a good idea from his point of view.

He'd be a good buy only if niko forced a move, and we then sold bentley too.

If niko wants to stay, we could get rid of bentley, gio and ohara and get pienaar in. That would be excellent

Some pretty basic analysis there. Kevin Nolan scores more from CM than Modric, would you swap them?

More to life than goals. Maybe 'Arry wants to sure up the midfield a little, playing Pienaar on the right would do that - similar to what we did for chunks of last season with Modric out there.

Also forgetting that Kranjcar has said that he might be looking for a move away from WHL if he isn't going to be getting games, and still isn't getting games.

Getting rid of Bentley as well cuts down the wage, and squad size and gives us a player on the bench (if he doesn't start on RM like you have said he could) that can cover us across midfeild. This could also free up a space on the bench for a youngster  and loads of people have wanted this.

He has 6 months left on his contract! Giving up Niko PLUS £1m would be ridiculous business.

Agree - Krancjar's probably worth about £8m, Pienaar about £6m.

Take into account the contract situation and I'd say £5m + Pienaar for Krancjar would be a fair deal.

Which on FM might work, but will never be anywhere close in real terms.

Any deal involving Pienaar, if there is cash involved, will be coming from our side, even if it involves Krancjar.

Which would be madness because Pienaar's quite liable to flop, like he did at Dortmund, whereas we know Krancjar's very capable of performing for us like he did when Modric was out last season.

Pienaar covers both flanks though while Kranjcar is much better on the left or central. If we sell Bentley and Kranjcar and replace them with one single player it makes some sense.

Hearing from Everton fans that this has been done. A figure of £1.5m has been floating around for a few days.

I remember a story that when a new coach arrived at Ajax around 2002-3, I think it was Ronald Koeman, he went to watch an Ajax academy match, and was greatly impresssed by a young Pienaar.

Koeman asked the coaches why Pienaar wasn't playing in the first team, and the coaches replied because he was "too small". Koeman replied, commenting primarily on Pienaar's technique and football brain: "I don't care about his size because he's better than the rest".

I may not be remembering the story perfectly, but I think that was the gist of it.

Whatever, Pienaar's an excellent signing at the price. He played with Rafa van der Vaart at Ajax, and he'll play instinctive pass and move football with the likes of Modric and Bale.

However, I think his signing means the end for Niko - which is a shame.

So this blog's from a gayster? Not that I have anything against homosexualists, you understand (indeed, some of my best friends are raving benders), but one male's attractiveness to another should not be one of the criteria for picking players.

Kranjcar's beachball-style appearance at the beginning of the season (not entirely unreminiscent of Mido's emulation of the Graf Zeppelin) suggests we have a slight problem in the training/application department, and rather bears out his reputation as a MOTD player.

I've never really thought that much of Pienaar. A couple of years ago yes. But that was then and surely we can get better than him now.

So he's not a superstar. So what?

He's a very decent and versatile player who's shown he can cut it in the EPL. He's not going to cost much, either in transfer fees or wages.

No-brainer.

Well, it certainly seems as though Kranjcar, Bentley and Gio are heading out of the door sooner rather than later, so they'll need to be replaced.

And Pienaar pretty much replaces them. And for a pathetically small transfer fee.

And, while I like Kranjcar and Bentley and the contributions they both seem to have made to the squad team spirit, neither of them are getting game time. So the first team won't be missing out on their departure. So when one of our first team midfielders gets injured, instead of Harry having to begrudgingly pick between three players he doesn't want to play, he can start a player who's raring to get playing and claim that starting position as his own.

Ok we don't lose out either way with regards to cost and that is the best thing about it all. And i'm not arrogant enough to only want a superstar either, but I thought "decent" we have quite enough of. I'd just like us to bring in someone with a bit more really, another step up. If we do sign him and he really breaks into the team and does well i'll quite happily eat my words. But I don't see why I should by getting especially excited. Sorry.

I think he's a fairly good player-a lesser version of Modric, even. He's versatile, creative and links the lines together well, though he isn't often much of a threat to score. He's a perfect player for Everton, and fits very well into their team, but I just don't see where he'd play for us unless he's seen as a backup to Modric who could allow us fit him into the team seamlessly should Luka ever miss a game or as a slightly more defensive RM. I feel like we'd end up selling him in two years for less that what he could otherwise be worth.

I still dont get the persistent chasing of Pienaar. Is he really an upgrade on what we have? Not so sure. I understand the comparisons with Kranjcar and i would personally prefer to keep the latter as i think he is a very good player. Whilst i dont always agree with SS57, I think he also has a point with regard to NK's fluctauating weight issues, which are often apparent.
