No, the football league shouldn't have to suffer because the premier league cant get its act together regarding its youth players

The football league has suffered from the rules regarding academies and see their talent be lost for peanuts for them to stagnate in U21 football

The Football league is what makes this country different from the rest and its not worth breaking it up imo
I'm all for ensuring the protection of the football league. However, the protection they deserve is not from u21 football clubs entering the pyramid - it's from incompetent ownership and chairman who spend frivolously and then sell club assets to cover their own financial stupidity.

I was at a club in the football league many moons ago for a short while. As a young player coming through the academy system I had my contract terminated because the club went into administration and the entire youth/ reserve teams were cut. I'm not going to sit here and say that I would have made a career of it because ultimately once I was let go I chose a different path but I'd argue that many more youth prospects are lost due to incompetent mismanagement of a club over having premier League academies competing in the same league

I have a family member that has just made their professional debut in the Championship at the end of the season and he said that whilst the players at U21 level are of a higher quality the football feels much less competitive than when he was on loan in the National League South.

We really need to have a rethink about the league pyramid and consider allowing U23/U21 teams
This! What club? As aiming for a loan to national league for my lad this season as part of his development, actual competitive men’s football

Anyone that’s seen more of this guy think he can make it here? From what I’ve seen he looks pretty solid, maybe another squad player in the making? Seemed like a pretty well rounded CM to me, without looking spectacular

I don’t know much about Craig (although good things have been said by my favourite poster @Lilywhite Rose among others) but I would love it if we bolstered our squad with players like him coming through, especially given no europe this season. It’s so much better than having players in their late 20s who aren’t quite the standard imo. With the number of subs now, pressing/attacking football and hopefully more than 1 goal margins in wins it should be easier to blood some of the young players.

So, he was already with us? Or had he left briefly, and were bringing him back? Or did he never join last year? I don’t get it.

He was already with us under a different role, I believe it was head of methodology. So this was essentially a promotion for him.

Yeah this. Don't know if you remember, but he's the one who we were all jazzed about and then he apparently didn't show up for his first day of work and it was mooted that he'd decided on another club. I actually hadn't heard his name mentioned after that, but apparently has impressed enough to earn a promotion.

He's at Wigan at the moment. Just made his debut at the end of the season. But the club is in a mess.

To be fair he's had to do it the hard way, got cut by his academy and joined an independent academy and worked his way back to the professional leagues

I didn't realise that was him.

That'll teach me to be on time for a job interview. Next time I just won't turn up and they'll make me CEO

it doesn't have to be the football league in fact I am sure most u21 sides would struggle at that level - though the use of the loan system by some clubs to prop themselves up is questionable at times - the pyramid itself needs a rethink clubs having what could be effectively 'C' sides competing in the equivalent of the Northern or Southern Conference would be beneficial all round in my view

Can I just say that this is the most interesting thread on the entire site in my opinion.

That's all. Carry on. :)
I agree, I didn’t know there were two Simon Davies only 5 years apart. It reminds me of the time spurs had Davies, Davis and Davids in the squad, we should have brought this coach in from the lower leagues to really confuse our opponents.

I do worry that without European football especially the likes of the conference or EL that the young players that are transitioning from youth to first team just won't get a sniff of first team football with us as we have just the three competitions to be in and will likely have a senior squad of 22 odd. Surely we must be looking for really good loans for a lot of these players.
