Would this mean a 48 match season for the U21’s? If that’s the case then hopefully that means there will be a lot more games shown on spursplay
There's also going to be playoffs to decide the champions, so you'd imagine 50-52 (depending on how they run the playoff and how many teams) for the eventual champions.

New U21 format

1 x single group containing 25 teams
  • Teams seeded based on multi-year performance
  • Fixtures drawn from 5 pots based on seedings
  • A 21-game week scenario would involve teams playing each club in their own pot plus 4/5 teams in all other pots, either home or away (would equate to 20 regular season games)
  • Results generate a combined table that determines play-off positions

From those that know better, is this better for youth development or not? - or does it not make any difference?

I guess until the league feels like more than a series of friendlies it will always be better to put players into competitive senior matches

I don’t think it makes too much of a difference really, if anything takes away some experience of a relegation battle I guess, but u21 and u18 leagues are challenging as the teams constantly change anyway, it’s competitive football though

I don't think that u21 football is fit for purpose at all really its to often a stagnating pond of players - its almost a polite step up from age football and doesn't develop players that effectively hence yet another change -

Personally I would extend age football to u19's giving them another year to develop - then have an u23 league with over age players included - but ideally second teams within the pyramid would be the way to go or links with other clubs

I have a family member that has just made their professional debut in the Championship at the end of the season and he said that whilst the players at U21 level are of a higher quality the football feels much less competitive than when he was on loan in the National League South.

We really need to have a rethink about the league pyramid and consider allowing U23/U21 teams

I totally agree with that - the u21's there is a quality there as you would expect but its not a stepping stone to senior football in my view - I would expand the youth element to at least u19 which gives that a slightly more competitive feel to it and still allows progression and gives those requiring it more time - then the pyramid question its continually shied away from in football but it would serve a real purpose for developing players but though I think generally there is agreement that the u21's don't work clubs either don't want to rock the status quo or are concerned that a bright young think might get clogged yet most recognising the flaws of u21 football beg around to send boys on loans not all of which are suitable

No, the football league shouldn't have to suffer because the premier league cant get its act together regarding its youth players

The football league has suffered from the rules regarding academies and see their talent be lost for peanuts for them to stagnate in U21 football

The Football league is what makes this country different from the rest and its not worth breaking it up imo
