From Jenas missing against PSV (from memory) to the League Cup Final defeat against Manure in Harry Redknapp's first season, Colchester, Basel, League Cup semi against Chavski...

I really can't remember the last shootout we won. So am delighted. Excellent pens.

Can someone give me the rationale why our best pen taker went 5th? If it went horribly wrong he wouldnt even be taking one. It's so stupid

Our best pen takers should be the first 3 as they are all guaranteed to take them
Yep I've said the same for years. The shoot-out could be over by the time they take their penalty, makes no sense

Will be honest, thought we needed to win within the 90 as I had zero confidence in the penalty shootout with who Chelsea had on the field in terms of penalty takers.

Surprised Werner didn’t take one. He was penalty taker for Leipzig if I remember correctly. Would have big asks of his mentality if that was our striker.

He declined to take one due to cramp

I thought similar TBH, perhaps it's a mindset thing, i.e Kane/José are in effect saying to the other 4 "I back you to score yours" and saying to the opponent "listen up fat guts; you best score and save all yours as our best taker is still to come!"

Also shows the mentality of Kane to take all that responsibility on himself that should he miss his we're likely out!

TBF to Jenas (and I knew before he took it what was going to happen) Gomes was bloody ridiculous at saving pens either guessing right or getting a hand to them!

Was he not on fire both legs against us, seemed to get to everything IIRC.

Well!

After seeing virtually nothing worth watching since Mourinho arrived (and, to be fair, for quite a long time before that) we now have two impressive performances in three days. Quite encouraging.

We were obviously too passive in the first half and I will admit to rolling my eyes quite a lot and wondering whether we would ever win a second ball. But apart from their goal (two Reguilon mistakes and nobody bothering to pick up Werner) we restricted them to nothing. It wasn't ideal, but for the second match in three days with a 'scratch' team and no strikers it was pretty good.

The second half was obviously very good. Our closing was far more aggressive, we had more of the ball as a result, and we looked dangerous when we attacked. I've been very critical of Mourinho and I'll probably always consider him to be a prick, but if his teams continue this level of performance - or improve it - I won't have much to complain about.

Well done to all concerned, and a special mention for Dier. Not just for his 'bathroom break' and leadership, but for carrying the ball forward deep into their half and causing us to have the extra man when we were pushing for the equaliser. Deservedly man of the match.

Have to say: how great was it to be able to watch the match and not have to fret a VAR decision and actually know that when goals were scored, they were going to stand? Ah, the good ol’ days...

We beat Watford in the Carabao a couple years ago on pens. It was the game we played at Stadium MK

Totally agree.

Football is far more enjoyable without VAR (in it’s current form).

If only it was just used for ‘clear and obvious’ errors - football would be in a MUCH better place.

Yeah, totally agree. Really just need some common sense to prevail.
