The funny thing is uefa should be trying to promote European football and get kids to come though our accademies to try and stem the foreign invasion from other continents.

Only if you read their PR.

A cynic could suggest UEFA are actually resolutely defending the money they make out of CL. And what better way can they do that than by giving the CL clubs a route to develop their youth more than by giving them an u-19 competition which NextGen have proved to be very popular (ie mitigation of launch risk for UEFA) - and ensuring the perenial CL qualifiers continue to qualify for CL riches, this time with a few of their own club trained stars. Its a funny old world - if you have a sense of humour

Might be a stupid question, but is there any sort of home grown rule for youth games?

None.

i've interpreted your 'home grown' question as being 'British' to answeer it, before explaining in the second part why I've done that..

In reality the % of 'British' players in the PL academies is usually greater than say 90%. Overseas players tend to be brought into UK clubs from about the age of 18 typically and hence even in the u21's I would guess the 'British' % is still two thirds - but of course its the best overeseas players being brought in which means that the % of British players coming out of the far end of a 'youth system' will be less than the (best of) the overseas players coming through.

Just as a side note, its difficult sometimes to define a 'home grown' youth. One of our best youth prospects, Milos Veljkoviv is Serbian by ancestry, plays for Serbian youth but brought up in Switzerland before being picked up by Spurs at age 15. He will almost certainly qualify under UEFA definition as a 'Club trained' player and under PL rules as Home grown. As another example we had a young striker who moved to UK froim Columbia when he was under 5 - if he had stayed with Spurs he would also be regarded as 'home grown'. So 'home grown' does not mean British in football terms, although most people assume it will do !

Cheers si. I used the term homegrown as there might have been a special rule that if you'd lived in a country a certain amount of time it might have counted. Bit moot since there are no rules.

Stoke U18s 0-4 Spurs - John's Reaction

Posted by Tottenham Hotspur on 23 September 2013 - 11:58
John McDermott hailed the Under-18s’ thumping win at Stoke City on Saturday as one of the team’s best displays of his reign.

Academy Manager John was delighted with the overall performance of the lads as they scored twice in each half to record a 4-0 win – making it five victories out of five so far this term, with Emanuel Sonupe capping a sparkling performance with a hat-trick.
Emanuel opened the scoring seven minutes in, before Nathan Oduwa made it 2-0 half an hour later.
Emanuel added our third just after the break, before completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot just before the hour mark.
“The performance as a whole was something that the boys have been threatening to do but not quite achieved,” said John.
“I’d say it’s one of the best youth team performances that we’ve had since I’ve been here. It’s nice when everything comes together – it doesn’t always happen but I thought the individual performances and team performances were of a real high quality.
“Stoke are always difficult to play against. It’s quite a long trip up there and we had a long trip to Burton in midweek as well, so to get off the coach and to play as well as we did was really pleasing.
“Our passing, our movement, penetration was excellent. I was pleased with the way that we got the ball back off them so quickly, so in all areas it was a very good day at the office.”
John also weighed in with praise for Emanuel after his treble: “I’m pleased for Emanuel that he was able to get his hat-trick and be a real threat.
“He’s not just a right winger, we want him to be a wide attacker and he scored a variety of different goals which was good.”
The lads also drew praise from various onlookers involved elsewhere in the game, something that also delighted John: “There were quite a few people whose opinion I respect that were very, very complimentary of how well the boys played. It’s sometimes nice just to get that recognition from other people as well.”

U18s beat Man City 4-1. Oduwa, Sonupe, Winks, Akindayini with the goals

6 wins out of 6

Heard we destroyed them. Also Ive been told that Bentaleb has now moved into the 1st team training room, so seems like they must really be looking for him to be the next person to come through

Gylfi Siggurdson is a perfect example of a player who isn't British but is classed as "Home Grown"

Harry looking to get another loan in?

Spurs XI: Vigouroux, A McQueen, Stewart (Ward 57), Gallifuoco, Veljkovic (Ball 45), McEneff, McEvoy (Lameiras 47), Bentaleb, Lancaster, Dawkins, D McQueen. Sub not used: Miles.

Several possibilities there.

Simon Dawkins - did well in MLS, goalscoring mid unlikely to make it as a PL player, but could do well in Championship.

Cameron Lancaster - Gave him PL debut, but long injuru since. Nothing exceptional since his comeback

Bentelab, Veljkovic, McEvoy - Great prospects but surely need a spell at a League 1 club first - maybe end of this season

Stewart - Good versatile defender, limited experience (4 games) on end of season loan with Crewe. Too much of a step up surely.

IMO the obvious one would be Dawkins.

I wonder if Veljkovic & McEvoy came off early as they are going to be on the bench against Anzhi?

Didn't the squad for Anzhi leave before this game? Think I saw a Holtby tweet from the flight early yesterday
