Totally depends on what you're into, mate.
You can eat at Hawker stalls for a pound and be full. However, assuming you're probably not going to just want to sit next to the side of a road and scoff down some Maggi noodles (no offence humble Hawker sellers)...
A decent restaurant in the city will probably cost about RM30 (four pound fifty) for a main course; RM10 for entree (one pound fifty), RM15 for dessert (2 pounds). I can recommend several where you can eat well for about this price.
You can certainly find cheaper, or for just a little more (total bill of about RM60-RM75 on food - you can eat really, really well.
Beer is more expensive. Maybe RM10 for a pot (half), which are advisable as the beer doesn't stay cold long. Again it highly depends where you go.
Hotels - not so sure. I know Malaysia has the cheapest 4 and 5 star hotel rooms in the country, but be warned that there are no AA or RAC ratings here. Some 5 star hotels would struggle to pass for 3 star in the UK. On the flipside, some are very swanky and at comparatively very reasonable costs. The ones right i the city are:
The Westin
Crowne Plaza Mutiara
Renaissance
Hotel Istana
or if you're trying to save a bit and don't mind occasionally sharing a lift with prostitutes, try the Federal or the Radius. They're a bit cheaper.
What days are you here, Ray? If you really haven't got a place to stay and it's between August 7th and 25th then let me know as I'm on my own in my flat (Missus and nipper in Oz). I have a spare room. Seriously. You can then save you're money.
Anyway, I'll have a word with some guys and see if they have any more ideas.
