Sherwood's Handling of Eriksen in the Last Week

This has been a predominant theme in the match thread, but I really feel this needs to be separated and discussed on its own.

Christian Eriksen has been, outside of Adebayor, the most productive attacking footballer at our club in the past two months. He scored vital goals against West Brom, United, and Palace that saw us win points in those massive games. Since January, he also sent two picture perfect crosses for Adebayor's vital goals against United and Swansea (the first goals in both of those games where we looked poor up until those points).

Eriksen has a unique role in this team. He is the best free kick and set-piece taker we have and has the ability to cross with accuracy and shoot with both feet from outside the box. We don't have any other players who can do all of those things.

With all of that in mind, Eriksen was left out of the Newcastle game after a subpar performance against Everton (where almost everyone was dire). I wasn't happy, but assumed it was a one time thing and that if we were to go for the win at Dnipro, he'd surely start. Yet there we were last Thursday, with numerous regulars like Paulinho in the lineup and Eriksen on the bench. Why would we take Eriksen all the way to Ukraine and stick him on the bench? It's the type of move we saw AVB do with Soldado earlier in the season. It made no sense to me.

Most thought at the time that because Eriksen was on the bench versus Dnipro, he was being saved to start today. Yet, there he was, firmly rooted to the bench for the entirety of 90 minutes. Sherwood could've played him for the out of form Lennon, or subbed him on the injured Capoue, or opted for him instead of Townsend, but he didn't. There is no indication that Eriksen was injured. He was, afterall, named as a substitute.

So, why then, did one of our most important playmaking, productive players not see the pitch in a vital clash against a team we had to beat (and who he had played very well against in his home debut)? Why did he not start against Dnipro, if he wasn't going to start today? With Walker injured, who did Sherwood think would take free kicks today? At one point, Naughton took a corner kick late in the game when we were pressuring them. That is beyond inexcusable.

I can take losing and even finishing 7th in the league, but not when we unilaterally disarm ourselves by leaving some of our best players sitting on the bench.

This was the type of managerial error that can have huge repercussions down the road, long after Sherwood is relieved of his duties. Losing out on 4th place to Liverpool will be devastating to our growth as a club. They will invest heavily to consolidate their position, while we'll be forced to fend of suitors for our top players (Lloris & Vertonghen) in a World Cup year with little time to find adequate replacements, as we likely won't conclude deals selling our top stars until August (as has been the case with Berbatov, Modric, Bale, VdV, etc).

All spot on. Don't think there are any legitimate excuses for today. We aren't out of the race for 4th yet, but with the attacking form of Liverpool and the self-harm we do to ourselves on days like today, it is impossible to have any confidence that we will close the gap at all much less erase it.

If he manages Eriksen like this I truly fear for Lamela when he's returned to fitness.

Let's be very frank. Erik Lamela isn't going to get games when he is fit in the current set-up. If Eriksen can't start, with all he has done, how will Lamela? I'd argue Sandro, also, isn't going to go back into the first team even when fit. That would mean dropping Dembele or Bentaleb, which he isn't going to do.

i am PISS!

Eriksen came on in mid week and changed the game, we became more attacking, he gave the team direction, an outlet to attack.

we needed him today, our set pieces was woeful... dammit sherwood.... i can't for hell believe he prefers Bentalab over both Eriksen and Paulinho....

Absolutely baffling to leave Eriksen on the bench and even worse to not even bring him on. Unless he has a slight injury or something he can't be happy with his treatment as one of the most promising players in Europe.

Unfortunately I think today was the end for top 4, we are now 6 points off Liverpool and with goal different it is effectively 7, so we need to win 3 more games than them in the last 11 games and personally I can't see it happening, especially if we play like that.

Disgraceful.

Tbh, if Lloris, Verts, Eriksen, Lamela etc. all hand in TR's this summer I won't even blame them. We ruin top quality players.

For me, Eriksen's play is dictated by confidence. 90 mins on the bench against Norwich does not produce that , Timmy

Leaving Eriksen out against Newcastle made sense because we could bully their midfield but Norwich were always going to sit back and try counter us or wait for us to make a mistake and so we needed someone who could unlock their defence.

If everyone in the match thread could see we needed Eriksen on then why the fuck couldn't the guy in charge of our team? It's scary when he makes errors like this and it's even scarier to think that he might be in charge for another year or so.

It just seems odd, as you said Eriksen had been so impressive for us during our run of results. He has an off game (where most of the team had a dire performance) and is sent to the bench. Yet we have seen Small Paul, Dembele, Lennon all have a bad games and go back into the starting lineup.

If he was carrying a minor knock i would understand not using him, but he doesn't seem to be.

Today we desperately needed someone with creativity to help unlock the defense and Eriksen seemed the obvious choice yet the call never came....

Just not sure what the thinking is on this...

Seems like since he had that Ajax send off thing he has been out of favour.
Maybe there's been a row behind the scenes. I was surprised we took him to Dnipro, then when he didn't start I figured he'd play today.

I thought we were building our side around him, suddenly now we look like Andre's physical team again.

Hopefully he just has a knock.

Look, I agree that his treatment of late has been shocking but calling yourself names is not going to make you feel any better or make Tim play Eriksen.... At least I don't think it will, maybe we should call you Piss just in case..... Good point Piss, I agree with you. (y)
