Tottenham Hotspur players and staff held a second dressing-room inquest in the space of three weeks after their Premier League thrashing at Liverpool.

Having staged a two-hour discussion after the 4-0 defeat by Chelsea on March 8, the Spurs players remained in the dressing room for an hour after Liverpool defeated them by the same margin on Sunday.

While this meeting is understood to have been relatively calm and reasoned, serious questions were raised between players and staff over what went wrong, tactics, team selection and training.

There is concern within the squad that head coach Tim Sherwood is sending his team out without a plan B if the initial set-up does not work. Some players have also become frustrated and disillusioned by the frequent changes Sherwood makes to his starting line-ups.

Other than the result, Sherwood’s hopes of keeping the job of head coach next season were hit by the fact that a section of Tottenham fans directed their anger at him at Anfield.

Louis van Gaal has met the Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy, and made it clear he is interested in the White Hart Lane post.

The Dutchman is also trying to force his way into the frame as a possible replacement for David Moyes at Manchester United and is expected to receive a lucrative proposal from Spartak Moscow.

Levy is also understood to be impressed by the work of Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton and is closely monitoring contract negotiations between the south coast club and the Argentine.

Pochettino is viewed by some Spurs insiders as a better fit for the club than Van Gaal, having successfully worked under a hands-on executive chairman, Nicola Cortese, and head of recruitment, Paul Mitchell.

The future of Pochettino could be affected by the admission of Southampton’s new director, Hans Hofstetter, that the club owe £27 million in outstanding transfer fees and face a £30 million bill for their new training ground.

That will only encourage clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham, to bid for teenage left-back Luke Shaw. Spurs are also among a host of clubs ready to make a summer offer for Adam Lallana.

Brazilian Paulinho was not part of Sherwood’s squad for the trip to Liverpool and the midfielder has admitted he is growing increasingly dissatisfied with life at White Hart Lane.

Paulinho, who joined Spurs for £17 million from Corinthians last summer, said: “I always want to play. I understand the team rotation because that’s how it works here, but I am not feeling well or comfortable. I want to be present, I want to play.

“The language is the most complicated thing as I am lazy about studying. I am learning little by little, but I don’t understand everything. The football language is easier, that’s not a problem on the pitch.”

Central defender Jan Vertonghen is another player who is becoming increasingly unsettled at Tottenham. He is waiting to find out the extent of the ankle injury he suffered against Liverpool after undergoing a scan.

Sundays match was an early April fools joke I'm hoping (at least Dawson's pass to Kaboul had to have been)

You'd have thought this would be all the more important given the fact that plan A tends to get exposed in under 2 minutes.

not sure if "plan A" is really a PLAN though. Looks like "it worked last week, it should work again"-ish, that i would not regard it as a plan. not sure what Tim's doing on the stand, looked can't be bothered to make any change until verts' off. defence is bad and no promising attack, guys up front looked isolated. in short, I will say he's no plan at all

They're concerned about not having a Plan B? I'm concerned about seemingly going out on to the pitch every week without a Plan A.

Maybe they should stick one in their diary for every Monday morning. Got a feeling they are gonna need it with Timmy involved.

To be fair, AVB had the same criticisms labelled against him too. i.e. No plan B. Always changing the team.

I like Pochettino and he may appear to be the 'right fit' whatever that really means and he does like a good passing game but personally given all the previous nice fits of a similar ilk I would now prefer someone to come in with a big winning personality to shake things up.
I firmly believe these players have no respect for Sherwood they need a manager who has delivered success and LVG fits that bill.
Whether him and Levy can co exist together is another question

LvG with Daniel letting him sign his players is the way forward. But, being Spurs, we won't make it easy

Why have an hour long inquest after the game when you could just take a 2 minute look at the matchthread when the lineups were released before the game even fucking started. You went away to Anfield with an attacking midfielder who's played CM only twice before in his life and an academy player in central midfield. Playing in front of a notoriously shaky defence against the best attack in the league. 'Oooh I dunooo Tim, don't think tictacs were wrong'

No, I can see Levy agreeing as LVG has not been known to sign star players costing mega bucks.

And the thing is we already have a good squad. All we need is a couple of additions (mainly a left back) and a manager who can get them to play well. We don't need to go and spend in excess of £50m and have another six or seven new first team players to integrate.
