Found this on another site. Quite funny if true:

Posting in here. Comes from the same source that told me about Purslow joining a couple of weeks before he did and also of the H&G takeover before it happened. Everytime he has told me something it's been spot on.

How Spurs got Van Der Vaart.

When VDV#s transfer to Bayern fell through - he was offered to Liverpool first for £8m. We didn't have the money but Purslow and Hodgson decided to off load anyone they could. West Ham (of all clubs) offered £8m for Babel. We accepted and put him "in that helicopter". Real Madrid accepted our bid.

In the meantime - Daniel Levy got wind of the transfer and offered Liverpool more money for Babel. Babel & Agent were more than happy to go and we accepted the higher bid. Helicopte heads to Tottenham. Babel lands and is kept waiting for 3 hours for a medical - gets f* *ed off and leaves. We don't have time to get any money together and Tottenham call VDV's agent and offer to buy him.

Rest as they say, is history.

We seriously bid more than £8m for Ryan Babel?!!

Proper cheeky if we did that and then made him wait on purpose so we could pinch VDV. Incredible!

If true that is truly amazing, its no wonder every other club hates doing business with us though.

Great story but I doubt it's true. I can't imagine why Real Madrid would've offered VDV to Liverpool first. It's clear that Mourinho and Harry get along well. I can't see any real connection between Liverpool and Madrid for that to have happened. Liverpool certainly weren't looking for that type of player because they had already signed Joe Cole. I genuinely believe we showed interest earlier in the window for VDV and that's why they came to us on transfer deadline day.

VDV came to us because we are the only club he truly wanted to play for. He loves Spurs. He's a proper Yid. Well he is now even if he didn't quite realise it at the time.

I'm quite certain that this is completely untrue.

Me too. I would bet a lot of money that the real reason Van Der Vaart was offered to us so cheaply, is Bale (and possibly Modric).

Madrid are always happy to move players on at cut prices to teams they may want to do business in the future and if Bale's stock continues to rise as rapidly as it has over the previous 18 months, every club in the world will want him.

Madrid will have realised this, and decided that if VDV was going to leave they should use him to their advantage, so offered him to us to help forge a good relationship.

sounds like sour grapes to me. were there any explanations as to why Blackpool, Stoke and a host of others are higher in the table than Liverpool?
