Perhaps they should all get lessons from Berbatov and Keane on the art of taking penalties. Only trouble is if they practised against Robbo in goal they'd think it was a piece of piss. In fact i wouldn't be surprised that was the one JJ had been doing in training with Robbo diving the other way each time. Robbo's becoming a bit of a Homer Simpson for me...

It's practise time. JJ runs up and Robbo's telling himself Hang on, hang on, hang... I'm going, i'm going to dive right... [JJ curls it left of him into an empty net] Doh!

JJ trys another one and this time Robbo's determined... Hang on, hang on... I'm going, I'm going to go, I'm going right again... [JJ wheels away arms aloft] Doh!

Ok this time, I'm going to wait... no I'm not... I'm going, I'm going left, he'll be expecting that though...I'm going right... Doh!

i actually quite agree with you on alot of things but honestly, what Cerny did to get dropped was no where close to the magnitude of what Robbo's done, alot more howlers, please.

Forget the past two season. Look at what has happend under Ramos and you can see that Cerny wasn't unlucky to be droped.

I really don't believe it was off the back of one spectacular error, which was what some people seem to think; no manager would do that if he'd been happy with a keeper's overall performance over a series of games. The notion that Ramos would play Robbo to put him in the shop window at the risk of jeopardising our results (including those in two hugely important cup games) is laughable; effectively, you're saying that Ramos was following orders from Levy in matters of team selection.

The fact is, Cerny deserved his chance, because it was obvious Robbo's confidence was close to terminally shot and he was looking increasingly iffy. But Cerny does just the one thing better than Robbo, and that's coming off his line and catching the ball. As a shot-stopper, he's not in the same class, and his kicking is little short of a joke; he can barely get the ball into the opposition half, let alone their penalty area; that massively restricts our attacking options.

It seems pretty obvious that after the initial blow to his pride Robbo got his head down (and together), worked hard on the training ground, and shed a few pounds. Ramos decided he could safely be let out on his own again, and he's repaid that confidence. A few flaps and one mistake aside (the free kick in the CC final) he's pulled off several top-drawer saves and looked much more like the keeper of two seasons ago.

It seems pretty clear to me that self-confidence is hugely important in football as in all sports.

In the pressure situation that is a penalty shoot-out - this is even more true, for penalty taker and goal keeper.

It is no secret that Robbo's confidence has been low this season. However, he saved a penalty early on, so putting the pressure onto PSV. In the circumstances, all the more credit to him.

Saving one out of the 5 is usually enough. It certainly should have been, and had JJ had hit the ball harder, or lower, or both...
