You want negativity? You got it.

Currently Tottenham Hotspur have 54 points in this season's Premier League. This is more than any relegated team has ever accrued in history. However....

Mathematically Spurs could still go down if Wigan win all their games and we lose all of ours (don't tell me you're not checking the fixture list). Those odds are just 949-1. Surely worth a qui... sorry, no, of course not. Got carried away. Ahem.

The idea of this thread is that, no matter how bad today goes, there is a reasonable chance that it won't be too long until we mathematically guarantee our status in next season's Premier League. So whether we finish 3rd, 4th, 5th or 17th, sometimes it's just nice to think about days goneby (not all that long ago) when we were more concerned with the bottom end of the table than the top.

We've come a long way baby.

I might put a fiver on that at those odds, you know, just in case...

Well, one doesn't like to jinx these things but with Wigan currently drawing, even when the inevitable happens and we concede three goals in the second half, we could, possible, maybe, with a bit of luck, not be facing relegation this season.

Fingers crossed!

We are currently the only team who can mathematically win the league as well as mathematically be relegated.

And while we're being all positive and mathematical, the earliest possible date for St Totteringham's Day this year is April 28th. That's if we get no points between now and then and Arsenal win all their games.

Oh, I'm sorry, are we still not talking about that?

LETS PARTY LIKE ITS 1999.....

We finished 11th that season, good god. The three teams above us were Derby, Middlesbrough and Leicester. How the fuck did we all get through the 90s?

In the 1927/28 season, coming into Easter Spurs were in 6th place. They finished their fixtures early, before the end of April, and looked safe. But while they were away on an end of season tour they were relegated with 38 points in the old 42 games 2 pts per win system. Pretty astonishing really, the way the whole league was sandwiched tightly together. There were no less than seven teams on 39 points, and Everton who won it only got 53 points. For the anoraks, here's the table:

Coo. Look at poor old Bury missing out on the Champions League (yes, yes, I know) only by goal difference.

Still, at least they've got a great side now that they can enjoy... oh, right... yeah. Oops.
