The whole of second half performance if one have no prior knowledge its the season opener, the lack of BASIC desire reaks of a team trying to get their manager sacked or we just wrapped up the title one match prior!

Seriously, i dont care if its 442 433 352 or if nagelsman coaching us, the NON desire shown by most players is repulsive on the season opener.

Normal service resumes. The better organized and disciplined team won if truth be told.

Is Hojbjerg an upgrade? Dont give me that first game malarkey. I have been watching him at Southampton and had my reservations when he came to us.

While I am not surprised with the result, I am still so disappointed with our overall performance. Sadly nothing has changed going by this performance.

It was like watching 2 players in the same mould except one looked poor and the other was diabolical. Hojbjerg and Winks cannot play together as a 2 ever again.

Hugo - 6
Doherty - 4
Toby - 5
Dier - 5
Davies - 4
Hojberg- 4
Winks - 4
Dele - 5
Moura - 5
Son - 5
Kane - 5

Sissoko - 4
Ndombele - 5

Teams have worked us out and it's pretty easy to see why when we play the identical system every week. Nobody willing to take the game by the scruff of the neck and make something happen for fear of losing the ball. Lazy pressing by the front 3, no bollocks in midfield to go and play, and a goal conceded due to our two centrebacks switching off. Our two new signings were pretty woeful and our long servers don't seem motivated enough to chase anything. Doesn't get much worse than that for the first game of the season.

I didnt think the first half was that bad. A couple of creative moves that deserved better, snuffed their attacking threat out and kept them looking very ordinary.

Second half was dire. I know Winks takes a pasting, but when he went off the CM was totally lost. 0 creativity and some very poor decision making. Hard to understand what the game plan was.

Hopefully just a 1 half blip.

First half I thought we did...fine. They were better in possession that us but we created the better chances. Doherty was probably the standout player - he linked well down the right and was at the heart of the best chance we made all game. No-one else looked particularly good, but aside from Winks and Davies' backpass no-one was particularly bad either.

Second half...complete shitshow. With the change of personnel we lost all shape, couldn't keep the ball and looked terrible both defensively and offensively. Everyone just looked lost out there and it was our worst half since the Sheffield United game. Really bad.

The most worrying thing for me was the rationale behind Jose's half time substitution. He felt we looked too open in the middle, when in fact I thought we were doing just fine defensively and if anything we needed more creativity in the side, not less. Dele was having a mixed half, but he was growing into the game so bringing on Sissoko and putting Lucas in the middle just exacerbated our problems tenfold. Doherty no longer had a player to link with on the right (summarised perfectly by Sissoko passing the ball directly out of play the first time Doherty gave the ball to him) so our (already limited) possession game fell apart and Lucas is a disaster playing through the middle against a team like Everton with a packed midfield.

That terrible change ultimately cost us the game.

The fact I can't even think of a hard save Lloris had to make shows the defense was good outside the set-piece. Dier could have jumped on the set-piece but give credit to Everton for the perfect cross and power header.
On another day Richarlison gets a hat trick. He had an empty net first half he missed and then had two or three second half that were inches wide, and from dangerous positions.

That was an awful insipid display from start to finish.

Lloris 6. Couldn't do anything about the goal.

Doherty 4.5. Was ok going forward and showed at the end of the first half what he did for Wolves however he was not great defensively and second half was poor.

Davies 4. Problem I have with him is that defensively he is OK, he had a brain fart that nearly cost us but he offers nothing going forward.

Toby 4.5. Just looked exposed against pace. Should have done better for their goal as didn't even challenge.

Dier 5. Won a lot in the air and I thought was our best defender but like Toby should have done better for their goal.

Winks 4. Just not a first 11 player. Does not excel at anything either defensively or offensively and is just too safe.

Holjberg 4. Gave the ball away in bad areas and needs to improve his acting. Was unimpressed with his contribution.

Son 5. Started lively in the first half. Problem I have with Sonny is that along with most of our attacking players (Kane and Bergwijn aside) he has no football intelligence. Runs down alleys, cannot pick out passes or crosses. When he is on fire he is amazing but too often do we see him go through the motions.

Alli 4.5. Just gives the ball away too much and slows down the game unnecessarily.

Moura 4.5. Work rate is good but end product is awful. Ball bounces off him and like Son has no intelligence. Drifts inside too much for me also. G

Kane 4.5. No service from a bland midfield and 3 players who have no intelligence to play through balls or dangerous crosses that ever get beyond the first man. I thought he was lazy today and didn't lead the press.

Sissoko 4. Wrong choice to come on at half time for Alli. Played 3 positions at least and he was probably best at right back....cannot pass, points and does not track in midfield and offers fuck all offensively.

Bergwijn 5. Was anonymous.

N'Dombele 5.5. Came on and made a couple of passes through the Everton midfield which was more than anyone else today. Errors in passing as well showing his weaker side but I would rather someone try than be safe all the time. I hope we see more of him.

Mourinho 4. I think we needed 3 in the middle against a physical midfield and it was kind of addressed at half time but with the wrong person brought on. We looked lazy across the pitch and the press was non existent. I dont know where we go from here. We need a CB, CM and a striker at least with an ACM potentially required as well. The lack of effort has really fucked me off.

I think these kind of games show how we need to improve as a team, but also as fans. Throwing the team under the bus with no positive sidenotes or excuses whatsoever shows a lack solidarity and togetherness that we are going to need to have a good season and in the future. I'll admit, i watched the game with a foreign commentary so it's easier to back the team when things aren't going well, the english commentary can have a really negative influence on a fans mindset. Equally what pundits write on the web can also be taken with a pinch of salt. Suttons usually overly negative drivel on the bbc live match page was typical fare. Some pundits are ****s (a couple come to mind) , let's be as brutally honest as they like to think they are. Also their opinions aren't as well informed as ours. We are privy to huge swathes of data/info tactics/gossip, we read and in many cases discuss these things on a daily basis.

To summarise, Everton did well with the bounce effect of their shiny new toys, we didn't begin well but also, in addition to no one being on their top game throughout, we were also found ourselves outnumbered in the midfield which was compounded by the lack of cohesive pressing and dropping back of the front 4. We made tactical changes, managed to get much more of a grip on the game and to be fair could have got a draw or sneak more with the chances we created. Everton made far too many chances however and so we need to collectively pull the socks up and get back to the work rate and tactical nous we showed in quite a few games at the back-end of the last campaign.

Finally, we are all hoping to get a shiny new toy in the form of a former player of ours whose name begins with B but i am not so secretly hoping that we try to also go and sign a player who was on everton's bench today, seemingly surplus and available and has an uncanny timeless type of spurs style to his game , that is Bernard.

B is for Bernard! get it done Levy. Good man.

Atrocious display. Can't be arsed with ratings but just hope Levy throws us a bone with a transfer, otherwise we'll be discussing that utter shit show for the rest of the week.

100% agree with this.

Seconded. The change was a disaster. Not that Dele was having a blinder, but he kept the balance right and was at least available to play between the lines.

The shift in formation and personnel weakened our midfield and neutered our only positive aspects. I just don’t understand what he thought he was going to accomplish. His description of what he was trying to do is the exact opposite of what happened and was also 100% assured to happen with the change that was made.

I didn’t think we needed a halftime sub. We were better as that half went on and we’re growing into it. If we needed a change it was Ndombele for Winks or if Jose felt he had to yank Dele, for him. Could have done Sissoko for Winks if we wanted a bit more steel and thrust.

Lloris 6 - didn't have much to do apart from pick ball out of back of net, and hope Richarlison left his shooting boots at home (and he had)
Doherty 5 - Had our best chance of game, but playing too far forward, and defensively non-existent. If he plays we really should go to 3 at the back and play wing back on other side.
Toby 4 - Slow, ponderous, didn't even make an effort to jump for the goal despite being the goal-side defender
Dier 5 - Slightly better than his partner
Davies 3 - Worst performance I have seen from someone that is usually a steady dependable 6 or 7 out of 10 player

Hojbjerg 3 - Possibly the worst debut of a Spurs player I have seen
WInks 3 - Just not, and never has been the quality of player we need, but was exceptionally poor today

Dele 5 - Actually thought was very harsh he was removed at the half, and there were more worthy candidates for Jose to scapegoat for his tactical errors.
Son 6 - Liveliest of our forward players
Moura 4 - Just anonymous

Kane 5 - One extra than probably deserves for glorious return pass to Doherty

Bergwijn 4 - Did he even touch the ball ?
Sissoko 5 - Was doing well on the right, when moved more central went same way as Winks and Hojbjerg
Ndombele 5 - At least he tried to pass forward

Let me just say this and let it register. We will suffer badly if we don't play Sanchez at the heart of defence we need athleticism at the back. Dier is the quickest player at the back without Sanchez and that is worrying.

Please just play Ndombele please I can't take our midfield

No one. Not one player, deserves a rating over 4. Hugo I’ll give a pass to, as he didn’t have much involvement, and could do nothing with the goal.

Jose deserves a 1. And that one is for getting 11 players on the pitch.

Lloris - 6 cant fault him for the goal probably our best player
Davies - 1 never was a good left back under poch and gets even more exposed now as a deeper leftback go figure sell
Toby - . 4 never been the same since his long injury layoff but still our best defender
Dier - 2 all over the place looks good in some matches and way off it in others
Doherty 5 liked his directness a shame he had no support from our crap midfield

Winks - 0 worse player on the pitch cant even do what hes good at retaining the ball, added fuck all and can never pass forward
Hojbjerg - 3 first game he tried and worked hard but when you got winks next to you he has to do withe work of 2 men
Dele - 4 wasnt as bad as people say got into good positions and should have never been taken off for the goal machine that is sissoko
Sissoko - 1 clown never gets into space to receive the ball and never asks for it
TN - 5 injected a good tempo but made a few mistakes but plays the riskier ball which we need but the rest of the team were utterly useless

son- 3. horrendous with his freekicks
Moura - 5. He was the only one trying out there
Kane -2 slow and laboured he always needs a few games to get up to speed

Just for an interesting comparison (where he's not the 'Head of Scapegoating') - Sky Sports best player for us was Sissoko (7) ("Tottenham's best midfielder after his half-time introduction. But there was not exactly a lot of competition.")

I wonder if the players would recognise these ratings?
Without instant fan feedback, I think they are deluded enough to think they played well today. And with that attitude, they'll never improve.

We need 60k fans back in the stadium asap, to inform them of how shit they are, and perhaps the penny will drop.
