Premier League rejects fourth-place play-offs idea

The Premier League has revealed it will not pursue the idea of a play-off for fourth place and the final Champions League spot.

At the Premier League's board meeting on Thursday, chairmen decided against looking into the proposal any further at this stage.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal were reportedly quick to voice their opposition.

However, other clubs were keen on the idea in principle.

Didn't even get to proposal and vote stage then??!
What's the betting the big 4 threatened to break away if anyone tried to mess with their monopoly?
I really hope Liverpool don't finish top 4 this season, if it can't be us I'd take City or Villa.

As expected, the 'big four' were opposed to the move, but it was surprising that Sunderland and Wolves led the pro lobby as opposed to one of the clubs who might obviously benefit, such as Aston Villa, Spurs or Everton.

Soccernet understands that clubs were loath to risk finishing fourth only to miss out on a place in the competition, while another factor was that English football's European coefficients would suffer if the club that finished seventh failed to get past the qualifying stage on a regular basis. Such an occurrence could see the English allocation cut from four clubs to three.

The Soccernet insider said: "Sunderland and Wolves spoke out very strongly in favour, but the big clubs didn't need to tell everyone they were not in favour - we all knew that.

"There had been plenty of discussion beforehand, so once Sunderland and Wolves had their say, it went straight to the vote.

"It was pretty even, virtually 50-50, but not enough to carry the 14 votes in favour to gain the two-thirds majority."

i hated the idea, IMO the end of the season run in would be less intresting and the season would then go on too long.

If we get4th or Villa or city then liverpool may well be kicking themselves for this, or arsenal once they turn shit again

If ever this does get voted in, it will be the season when we finish 4th by a 10 point margin only to lose to sunderland or someone in the play offs.

Good. I am old school and believe the current competition is devalued and it should return to champions only. I do not even regard 4th as a champions league spot - it is just to get a qualifier, then if you win it's champions league. It's like saying the Ireland v France play-offs were games in the world cup finals.
