I just watched the latest VAR controversy and honestly, I think the West Ham player fouls the keeper. It looks like stops moving his foot upward and over the keeper and instead lower it in order to give the keeper a kick. It's a foul.
I've watched it a few times and thought Bowen unnecessarily left his foot in. Certainly it wasn't as clear cut as many of you are saying.

Hopefully it’s not too soon but for succession planning for Kane we could do worse than Ivan Toney. He looked good last season but he’s taken it on a level in this one. Two of his goals yesterday were wonderful.

I'm not a fan of nitpicking over refereeing decisioms and not gonna lie, it annoys the fuck out of me. Oh if this isn't a red card, why was it a red card in 2021. Like fuck that, I ain't interested.

One thing though that I've always maintained and still not sure why it's not been implemented is if you can't tell its offside without the fucking lines, then it isn't offside. None of this line drawing. Fuckin fed up of line drawings and shit. Watch it a hundred time on replay, that's fine, but no fuckin line drawings. If you can tell it is offside then fine, otherwise goal stands.

I thought they weren’t going to do it any more. Refereeing in the PL now is worse than I can remember in the last 30 years. I couldn’t celebrate any of our goals in the ground today just because you don’t know if they are going to try and chalk it off or not.

I would much rather the lino make a mistake like in the villa game, than us have to go through this ridiculous line drawing every game. Nobody knows where they stand. Apparently the next thing is automated offsides, however that works. VAR is here to stay though unfortunately. They aren’t going to go back on it and admit it is a mistake and ruins the game.

Hear this all the time.
Are you telling us that you just stood there while everyone else cheered?

From one angle I can sort of see this if I actively try to read into it. Even then it has no effect on the play and there is no way Mendy got hurt from that light of a touch.

Either way, whichever way you look at it, it's not a clear and obvious error from the ref, which the long review is further proof of.

Along with the non-called foul on Højbjerg last (?) season, this looks like one of the biggest VAR robberies I've seen.

Evening Standard..
Arsenal trio Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale and Oleksandr Zinchenko are all in contention for today’s clash with Man United after travelling with the squad.

Me: Yep - as expected.

Now, would it be better if the rule was changed so that rather than any legal part of the body in an offside position = offside, to any legal part of the body in an onside position = onside. I'd be open to that.
What a great shout. I'd go with that. It wouldn't change the argument over where the line is drawn - it'd be a debate about where the back toenail is, not the front - but at least more goals would stand, and a player would have to be a full body width offside for it to be disallowed.

They don't need brown envelopes. Keeping the biggest sides competitive in the table for as long as possible makes the league tons of money through better tv ratings and bigger tv contracts.

That's pretty clearly the goal here. It's obvious and it's disgusting.

‘The League’ as you refer to it is the will of 14 clubs on any particular issue. There are no shareholders nor business entity other than the equal votes of the member PL clubs. This isn’t the NFL, NBA, or MLB.

Those 14 clubs don’t want to get relegated so aren’t going to be sacrificing points for TV ratings and TV contracts in a league they may not be participating in.

All eyeballs on the refs then. Hopefully there’s chaos and if fucks Arsenal over big time.
Saw a lot of Arsenal chat on Twitter about how they always get screwed by VAR !

That’s news to me LOL

A good friend of mine is an Arsenal fa. Very sensible guy, a former ref and current coach. Generally knows his stuff.

But when it comes to reffing against Arsenal and VAR, he just turns into a completely different person. He's in his 50s so can't even put it onto youthful exuberance.

In the same way they seem to have convinced everyone of the meme 'xhaka gets a red card for that' when in actual fact he can make 10 bookable challenges a game before he gets a yellow

Whether the foot makes contact deliberately or not is immaterial. The decision gets made just based on the fact it happened and … it’s just not a foul. It just can’t be. It’s a contact sport with two players heading towards each other at breakneck speed and Mendy makes the action he wants to unfettered. The foot is nothing more than a brushing glance from a 50/50 situation, Mendy doesn’t like the result of what he does and entirely simulates to get himself out of jail. I can’t back that, I just don’t know in what positive circumstances that can be considered a foul. There are 50/50s that occur tens of times across a game with reasonable contact occurring and they are never fouls

I am in such two minds... a draw today would be good for us but I want Arse to lose and not just lose but hammered, however Man United are on a decent little run and will prove to be a threat going forward in the season.

"iT's A cOnTaCt SpOrT!!!"

Mendy plays the ball, Bowen doesn't and tries to be sly and gets punished for it. It might be soft as hell, but he could have avoided it by just not doing what he did. Also, there is no need to lie about the situation, that is not a "brushing glance". You yourself describe them as "heading towards eachother at breakneck speed" and he kicks both Mendys hand and his arm. It's pure stupidity on Bowens part and he got punished for it this time. It's 100% a foul.

Hmm yeah, I could take to task most elements of this but tbh, it’s a matter of a differing opinion. Agree to disagree

I would accept the West Ham goal being taken off if the PL was using VAR like the rest of Europe. But we've been told over and over that the VAR will only get involved for blatant errors. We see tackles like VVDs that should be red but isnt a clear error. We see Romero pull a guys hair and it wasn't a clear error. McTominay plays volleyball last week and it wasn't a clear error.

But when it comes to removing a goal all of a sudden clear and obvious goes out the window. When it comes to removing the Pk against West Ham clear and obvious goes out the window.
