I would have thought if they ruled it a pen they would check to see if it was a foul...

Looking on twitter, I can only assume people are complaining about the pen because they are looking at the ball, not contact.

It was the other way round, the ref deemed it a foul but was it on the line in which case a pen or outside of the line in which case a free kick...

I know, but once VAR rules it on the line, I'm surprised it then doesn't do the check for a foul.

On reflection, I think they didn't think Dean had made a "clear and obvious error" giving the foul but were just confirming whether it was inside or outside the box.

That's because the ref decided it was a foul... So they didn't need to look at it again.

Hardly breaking news, but christ, Liverpool's defence looks so much more susceptible to aerial balls now. Balls lumped into the box that VVD would've previously heatbutted into oblivion are now cleared weakly or nodded back and forth causing problems.

It's like us losing Kane - they aren't anywhere near the same team without him.
