I dislike Nicol but I can see to the outsider why this would appear archaic and overkill - we had one or two here who said the same.

This running isnt exactly going to be done all season and it is just to get them up to fitness and speed within a short period of time.

I have no idea how hard other teams preseasons are, but assuming they're not as intense, I wonder what Southampton players are thinking watching that? Would be kinda like getting ready for a boxing match and seeing your opponent working out like a madman in preparation. Could be a bit intimidating.

Isn't this running about teaching the players about what actual exhaustion feels like. Teaching them how deep the well is? So in a game, when they'll never have to go quite that deep, they really know that they have it in them.

This training is as mental as it is physical, and Conte knows not to do it mid season because it's too demanding for recovering bodies.

That looks brutal

Wonder what Bissouma is thinking. Think there was an interview with a Brighton player who said Bissouma is amazing but is by far the worst trainer. Hes not going to be able to do that anymore. May even step him up another level

Haha.. The poor fucker is rattled. Apparently Conte won titles because he had great players and nothing down to his regime. Mind saying the same about your beloved Klopp and Pep ?

Conte took over Juventus after they finished 7th twice. Kinda destroys his whole point that he then refuses to concede, Conte went into 2 situations finding his team in midtableish, Juve and Chelsea and won them the league the first season he had them.

If Conte was at any other team than Tottenham this season I would be prepared to say that there is a strong chance of a League title but it's Spurs and our mentality as a club is shakey.

But Nicol isnt a layman outsider though. He very well knows how these trainings are tailored to be safe for the players but decides to rant about it

Even Son who is so approachable to almost any people can feel he also scared of Conte. ?

Good.
I'm sure Conte demands respect, he is the boss. But great to see how happy he looks there, appears to be in a very happy place with us right now which bodes well

The game has change dso much now that Nicol pretty much is a layman now. Nedum Onuoha was interesting as he has played the game more recently.

If the drills were weekly an dduring the season then I would think the players would have an issue but this is bloody pre season after a month off and a pre season game in two days and the season start in three weeks. I think context is important.

lol this is such a weird discussion to me

yeah, the running looked tough, but isn't that the point of pre-season, to build both physical and mental toughness and conditioning? The body is capable of so much more than what the mind thinks its capable of and that's one of the points of these sessions. It looked hard mainly because of the endurance aspect but to be fair it was pretty low intensity with a bit of rest between each run.

i really don't get the odd complaints I've seen tbh. it's so weird to me. Where I'm from athletes in one of our local professional sports would look at this type of running as a walk in the park, tbh, and even amateurs would do this type of running in pre-seasons for their local amateur competitions

If the Netflix sports docs I watch are anything to go by, US sports still do these 'suicides' on the regular. Especially in basketball which demands constant running and a v high volume of games

In basketball, if a team has a game where the level of effort was found lacking, it's not unusual for them to go to the next practice and find that the rims have been removed from the backboards. Running. More running. Lots of painful running until you want to die. And in hockey, there's a thing called a bag skate, which serves the same function. It's part punishment and motivation, part recognition that a fitter player will put up a more consistent effort.

And honestly, having watched the recorded stream, I can't see anything that would be problematic from an injury standpoint from all that running. It's not sprinting, it doesn't involve sudden acceleration, cutting, or hard turns. It's just lung busting straight runs.

I agree, that's the kind of training I used to do for years. Train to the point of exhaustion and collapse. This is common in a lot endurance sports, just watch rowers or cyclists. I'm bemused this isn't common for footballers in pre season. I will confess though, that with the heat and humidity it would of hurt big time stylee.
