Yeah, he doesn't 100% suit either position, yet he is our top goals scorer and no-one in our team has assisted more. I was thinking earlier that, if he played LW, he would benefit from playing with a striker like Zirkzee, someone who can hold the ball up, turn and play a through ball, but Son is 32 in July, so no point bringing in a player for the short term. For sure I think you’re right, that is probably part of it. Age and stamina probably plays a part in that also. Plus I think the role of the WF in this system to keep the width doesn’t necessarily suit him stylistically.
I’d still like to try him and Richy up top this weekend but I don’t think it’s a long term solution. It’s a bit of conundrum because I think we would be better with a more focal point in the box but you can’t drop Son as he is our best attacking player. Ether way it’s just food for thought when considering Richy’s future and if we were to get another striker in the summer.
The way I see it, assuming he signs a new contract, Son should play a mix of Striker and LW, depending on the opposition, as first as a starter and then eventually as a sub, when his age catches up with him.
