Is that any barometer of success?
Relatively speaking yes it is. Being recognised as one of the best in the country at what you do is a success.

If I ever got an England callup as a player then I would definitely regard that as a barometer of success and I think to say otherwise would be ridiculous.

Are you stating being called up to his national team isn't a measure of success?

Well McGuire plays ahead of him and he has been absolutely shit for utd. Correct me if I'm wrong but Dier didn't play a minute for England.

If you're happy for Dier to lead the line this year again go for it. Personally don't fancy paying to watch him head back passes to Salah and not putting tackles in against rashford.

Come on mate, please don't resort to dirty debating tactics by reframing the argument. The question was not whether I'm happy for Dier to be leading the line because we've already stated that as a no. The debate is whether Dier is shit and I'm telling you the answer is no, in the right system and one that suits him better he's not shit. He's a very capable back up option if needed.

Whether he plays for Utd or whether Maguire played ahead of him for England is also a moot point because teams set up differently. For England Maguire has been very good so it stands to reason that he continues getting picked to start. If you're going to use that argument then maybe Riquelme was shit, and maybe Veron was shit. Maybe Fernando Torres was brilliant at Ath. Madrid and Liverpool but overnight he became shit because he signed for Chelsea and Son is shit because of last season under Conte.

I never used the word shit. Read my post again.

Torres was bad after a knee injury that severely limited him that is a dumb arguement.

Dier was a core part of a defense that shipped a ridiculous amount of goals.last year and in my opinion needs to leave for the greater good. As I stated, I think he's a great guy and been a good servant to us. I wish him nothing but the best but he has never been of the required level at CB. Capable of the odd goo patch but not the required standard.

Fair point, you didn't say Dier was shit you said the defence was shit and I stated that they weren't shit players just that the performance had been shit due to the structure they played in.
When the conversation turned specifically to Dier I had assumed you believed Dier to be shit but that's not the case.

I think most would agree he's not an elite defender. He was a very good DM for a few years and one of my favourites from the poch era. He's just never been a great CB and sadly is someone we need to cut adrift to get to the level we need.

Personally would keep Sanchez over Dier as he has more athleticism but he's terrible on the ball. Hopefully we get a full reboot and go again.

Is this the Dier thread?

Please take your discussion about his relative merits and/or success to his thread and don’t have it here.

Scott is more of an 8 though. I feel like that’s a good thing though as just Sarr as an 8 until Bentancur is fit isn’t enough depth. Devine could deputise for Maddison and is better suited for that role
I’m really not one to make credible calls on this subject, so I asked my daughter. She claims Scott is a 4 - at best a weak 5 on a good day.

Was a great midfielder for a season or 2 and I genuinely love his character but the defending against Rashford for the utd goal demonstrated his weaknesses.
Although that bit of defending looks bad it's actually decent, he was delaying to allow others to make recovery runs and back him up, but they just left him 1 vs 1 against a player that would burn him for pace if he stepped closer. As much blame there on the other 9 outfield players.

I think one of the reasons he’s potentially moving on is because he’s probably one of the better sellable assets we have. Good player, in his prime, position we have decent cover in, and only a couple years left on his contract.

If he stayed he’d do a job, but if he goes it might provide us with the funds that we need to revitalize our back line. No brainer to me. Biss and Skippy are more than good enough to have the 6 role covered for this season.

I see the logic with selling, but also I remember he got a few important goals/assists, had an occasional creative streak in the melee of a crowded opposition pen area ....there was something going on between his ears. Good Pr man.

Not in the energetic Ange mould though .
